JOHANNESBURG: Daryl Cullinan was one of South Africa's best batsmen following the team's readmission in international cricket. He made his Test debut against India in 1993-94 and played some memorable innings against the subcontinental giants. His unbeaten century in the third Test of the 1996-97 series against India, which helped his team salvage a draw, remains one of the best played under pressure by a SA batsman. During a chat with TOI, Cullinan spoke about the challenges India are presently facing in South Africa... Is it a little strange to look at an Indian team without Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman? It is. They were wonderful players and played some great knocks here. Those guys used to spice up the series. They will be missed. Are you disappointed with the way the new Indian team has performed? Yes, it's been disappointing. I expected a lot more from them. But then, we have to acknowledge that they haven't got enough time to get acclimatized to South African conditions. It's not easy to come here and get going right from the word go. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma came here with a lot of promise. But things haven't gone well for them... They haven't. They have to try and get to the line of the ball as much as possible. They are adventurous by nature and I think they are going for too many shots a little too early. Get used to the tracks first and then go for the shots. That should be the mantra. You've been a middle-order stalwart. Do you think Virat Kohli is the right man for the No. 4 slot? I'm not sure. I still have my doubts about Virat's technique. When he is playing on the backfoot, his left leg is invariably on or outside the leg-stump. That means he is not coming to the line of the ball and his bat face is opening up. Yeah. something on the lines of mental disintegration which the aussies did. The whole media, ex-players everyone would say something or the other against the main player or the captain. Generally didn't work against players like Sachin or Lara. It's time that Virat also shows the same.

his technique is not as problematic as raina, and watch him closerly, he plays like ponting. ponting was good with this thumping pulls, if virat can do that, then he will achieve success.

Best technique was always dravid from what i have seen. But still he couldnt perform well in SA.

While playing backfoot shot, ideally your back foot should come on off stump. That is what is known as copy book style. In modern day Indian cricket I have not seen any player other than Sachin Tendulkar whose back foot always comes to the offstump . Watching the square cut of Dravid has been the most beautiful display of batting just because his backfoot moves so quickly but lately he also had stopped moving his back foot while playing on side backfoot strokes.Tendulkar was the only one who has been consistent. Most of the Oldies like Amarnath, Gavaskar, Vishwanath all had solid back foot technique. I guess it was the introduction of Ganguly and Sehwag which changed the batting style of modern day Indian batsmen and brought us to the era where you can succeed without foot movement.
