Zaheer should have retired before this tour. Huge fan of his, but having been saying for a year he is done. Not many fast bowlers are going to perform at the age of 35, more so someone with a history of struggling to maintain fitness.

Quite obviously he should continue in that case. But the challenge with Zaheer was never going to be about his skills. It is about how he can maintain his level of performance over a series given his fitness. Looks to be running out of steam even in the second test, even the second innings of the first test some would argue. Can he sustain himself for 5 tests in England? I doubt it.

He might. Zaheer's ability is not in question. His fitness ,however, is. Has been for quite some time.

I think he should not continue even if he gets a fifer. Better to leave on a high than be thrown out. He is not looking fit enough for pace bowling in tests.

ZAHEER SHOULD STAY!! More out of desperation rather than anything else!! Out bowling line is still very very brittle. One day Bhuvaneshwar is the toast of the town and the next day he's banished to SHU (Orange is the new Black ref). Today everyone thinks Shami is the next big thing, in a few days folks will want his head on a plate!! I can go on about Ishant...Yadav etc... Zaheer is nowhere near his best, but at least the bowlers have someone to turn to. He did do the hard grind to get back. Also hes bowled in NZ and Eng and the bowling unit can count on his experience, especially England. Until and unless the bowling unit is settled (hopefully after the Intl' tours and WC'15), let Zaheer play. Ishant as much as his hes improved in SA cannot lead a bowling attack.

Let's wait till tomorrow before we pass judgement. There has been nothing here with the new ball even when SA bowlers bowled. Zak's weapon is reverse swing and we have seen the ball here tends to reverse because of dry conditions. He may prove handy tomorrow.

This turning to seniors for advice is overrated. Everyone thought that , when Sachin retires, the young batsmen would miss his mentoring. In actuality, this young group of batsmen are playing their best with no senior batsmen around. Young people often play without fear when there is nobody to mentor or share their experiences of failures with them. Ours bowlers as a group would not be any worse than they are without too much experience around.

But India's batting and bowling resources are poles apart. There are plenty of batsmen in FC cricket who are good enough to take the big step into International cricket. Our bowlers paint a different and poorer picture altogether. In most matches opponent batsmen take them to the cleaners....heck they hit them in most FC tournaments, Ranji, IPL, galli cricket!! In the ODI matches vs Australia our bowlers looked lost!! No one to guide them talk to them, they just gave up hope. Agreed those were high scoring matches but India at those moments really needs a senior pro to turn to. Hopefully in a year India will have a couple of young bowlers who will put their hands up to lead the attack, but right now that cupboard is empty!!

There have been so many matches with an experienced Zaheer around but our mediocre pacers being taken apart that I am not sure they can implement the advice Zaheer is giving them. Further, if Zaheer is actually a master tactician and motivator for young pacers nowadays, get him as bowling coach. What is our actual bowling coach there for , by the way .... if he cannot guide a bunch of young lads getting hit.

He should retire immediately and take up a coach / mentor role. He is a liability in the field and also with the bat. His fitness is constantly in question. Does not merit a place in the first XI based on his bowling alone. He needs to show more commitment with the bat and in the field.
