anwer gavaskar sanga sachin aravinda miandad prassana jayawardene (wk) imran © waqar wasim murali went with sanga over dravid because he is more dynamic and score quicker. dravid, while he was a great batsman, has no business batting in a xi with so many greats. he'll just suck the life out with his slow batting. aravinda is a the x factor down the order and provides a handy bowling option. prassana jayawardene is the best keeper from asia in the last 25 years. anwer over sehwag is an obvious choice. nobody likes a ftb opener.
You forgot Chaminda Vaas and Ramesh Ratnayake?

Pretty similar teams from most Gavaskar, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Miandad, Sangakarra, Imran, Kapil, Wasim, Kumble, Murali We can make it more interesting with a proviso At least 2 and a Max of 3 from each country including Bang. So 2 Bangbros and 3 from the rest
+ 1. I think most of the people, if they are not in mood to troll, will agree with this. I fail to understand how come Anwar's name is coming up in this thread. He won't even get in Pakistan all time team. I would rather take Ramiz Raja as opener than him.

Most of the people who are writing off Anwar has never seen him batting against fast bowling. He was amazing. Had the silky touch of Ganguly with raw power like Inzamam to hit over the top. Was much better technically than Shewag against pace.

Most of Anwar's runs outside Asia were scored when batsmen from both sides got big knocks, and conditions were easy to bat. The Durban hundred was the only exception perhaps. He was a sweet timer of the ball, and had an amazing flick shot you don't see in others, but he was not a reliable player of good fast bowling, his ODI records outside Asia are further proof that he was more of a home/Sharjah bully. Overall Sehwag was a far superior batsman compared to Anwar, having a superior average, strike rate, match winning knocks over a much longer career.

^^ Anwar was nice little player in his own right but to compare him with Sehwag is silly. it is comparing Akram with Vaas. Sehwag is once in a generation player and ATG where as Anwar like many Srilankans Mahela and Co was just a mediocre FTB by comparison.

Anwar was a highly successful version of sadagoppan ramesh. Beautiful player, solid on the backfoot, good puller, cutter and flick of the ball. But loose around offstump coz he was a compulsive driver. i'd easily take ganguly over him bec ganguly was the best leftie i've ever seen in his mastery of the offside. Thats high praise coz I also saw lara. Gangu was weak on the legside but on a long enough timeline, impervious offside play is more important than impervious legside play and gangus stats bear that out to a degree. "i'd easily take ganguly over him bec ganguly was the best leftie i've ever seen in his mastery of the offside." Ganguly was good player as long as he was not facing a genuine fast bowler, in that case I'll replace Ganguly with Anwar. But, no doubt Sehwag was way better than Anwar and Ganguly.

First we are discussing Tests matches. Don't mix it with ODIs. Even you do it Anwar has a better average than Shewag in ODIs and played most of his career facing the red ball, which swings for a longer time and reverse swings more than the white ball. Secondly, about big kncks, I can only remember Shewag playing one such knock as well in NZ. Otherwise all his big hundereds came on tracks where others racked up huge scores, home tracks or were turning square. Thirdly, Anwar faced better attacks than Shewag, WI / SAF attacks were much better during Anwar's time and WI was rubble during Shewag's time. SAF only got to the current situation after addition of Philander to the attack, and Shewag hasn't played the trio. Fourthly, Shewag is a better player on flat tracks and spinning tracks. Although Anwar did beat up Warne once in a while, in this regards not even close to Shewag. If the match is played in the SC I would without hesitation replace Anwar with Shewag and VVS with Jayawardane. But for overseas tests, I still prefer Anwar.

Err no. ganguly's troubles against genuine pace is not as bad as anwars trouble to movement outside off stump. Since there are way more bowlers who can swing the ball than bowl at 90mph, i'd rather take ganguly than anwar Sent from my GT-S5830D using Tapatalk 2

Enough to know that ganguly would walk into an atg sl team in both formats. Sent from my GT-S5830D using Tapatalk 2

Is it enough that Anwar faced the hostile WI bowling side? It would have been creditable if Anwar had scored test runs agains the WI side. Even playing at home, Anwar could not score freely against WI - averaging 19 in 4 tests. He did nothing extraordinary against SA, either at home or away, save for that one knock at Durban. Anwar did not succeed much against good fast bowling because he was not strong on the off-side, often getting out to edges while driving, or getting trapped in front to the ball coming in. Sehwag does have some technical weakness (which is probably why he gets discounted whenever these topics surface), but Sehwag is a flawed genius. He is a once in a generation player. He can transform draws into wins and wins into super wins. You can find a dozen or two dozen Anwars in history but you can't find another Sehwag - a test opener who scored at nearly run a ball at an average of 50 over his 100 test career. It is not appropriate to compare him with Anwar who accomplished much less and played half the number of tests Sehwag did. Sehwag is better compared with Pakistani players like Inzamam ( I would rate Sehwag ahead here also, because of his unique style of aggressive play) who played full career and also achieved more than Anwar.

Ganguly was an underachiever in test cricket. With the start he had (averaged almost 50 in the 1990s), he should have ended his career with an average of 45+. His only real weakness was express fast bowling.

People can't be serious picking Anwar over Sehwag. First of all if the conditions favored batting, Sehwag was a monster, one of the all time best. You can't ignore that. Secondly compare Anwar and Sehwag with the same amount of matches. Sehwag was not always such a poor player overseas. There is no way Anwar is ahead of Sehwag. Secondly I have seen a number of people picking Hanif Mohammad as an opener. His stats are not good enough as an opener. Zaheer Abbas was also not good enough overseas (except England) to get a spot over the likes of Miandad. Dhoni is a terrible batsman and an average keeper. He is poor against swing bowling, both batting and keeping. Sanga may not be the best of keepers but he will get the job done. I would play Sanga as a keeper. My XI 1. Gavaskar 2. Sehwag 3. Dravid (VC) 4. Tendulkar 5. Miandad 6. Sangakara (wk) 7. Imran Khan © 8. Kapil/Kumble (depending on the conditions ) 9. Wasim 10. Waqar 11. Murali PS. Ignoring match fixing.
