Shami’s Decline Could Be Due To Excessive Workload As India’s Premier Pacer

i dont get your point? The general issue i want to make is your not talking about a bowler who is 30 plus. your talking some about somebody who is in the prime of his career age wise. Will be disappointed with shami if lack of stamina is the reason for his bowling decline. Its not just Shami mind you nearly every Indian bowler Odis or Tests have had poor figures than their career stats suggest (barring ishant who had **** stats to begin with)
All I will say is, there is a reason why our fast bowlers, who often impress everyone both by skill and pace when they debut, soon lose both. Secondly, there is a reason most team play 5 bowlers in tests

That is why I started a thread praising the Pakistan bowling coach with rotation. I have been saying it for a decade to bring in rotation for cricket as baseball is doing it for ages. Pace bowlers can only take so much.

This is Dhawal Kulkarni bowling mumbai to a ranji trophy in 2012/2013 10 matches 320 overs in about 3 and a half months. That too on some road like Wankhede wickets (barring the final) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/indian-domestic-2012/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?class=4;id=2012%2F13;team=1654;type=season Maybe its time to axe Shami and play Kulkarni. As its clear the boy has the stamina. I think people have zero knowledge of Ranji cricket. Its compressed into about 3 months where most teams play 8, 4 day matches.
And he got injured after the hectic season.Thats basically the point.

you need an allrounder. England became number 1 from 2010-2012 on the back of 4 bowlers and 0 allrounders. 3 seamers and 1 spinners. That was the Flower mantra. Stokes and Watson are the only real allrounders today in international cricket. Ie people who bat in the top 7 and bowl significant overs (more than 15 overs per innings). Most teams play 7-4. I am all in favour of inducting Rishi Dhawan. However of the 20 matches Shami has played, 6 have been test, 2 of them in the sub where the spinners bowl the bulk of the overs. India for eg played 5 bowlers against WI. So effectively Shami has played 4 tests with 4 bowlers. The rest are ODIs where regardless of an allrounder playing or not he has to bowl a max quota of 10.

no he played the IPL and went on to play for India A after a 2 month break in July and August. He got injured this ranji season. Unless your telling me last ranji season was linked to this ranji seasons injury

It all adds up.If u have that kind of work load your body will break down .Its such ridiculous scheduling at domestic level and more so mismanagement by teams which contribute to injuries we see in indian fast bowlers. 8 ranji matches minimum + zonal tourney+list a in 5 months is workload which would take it toll on any bowler.

^ and you forgot that they have to travel long distances many times by train. Even in first class thats not a good feeling doing it many times in the space of few months Atleast the international boys have first class seats and travel by air conditioned luxury buses etc and stay in the best hotels. The point is, if Shami would not have played for India he would have to put the same effort with WB who reached the semis of the ranji trophy this season. Its not just ranji, English county cricket can (depending on the rain) be even more brutal. Teams play 16 first class matches compressed into 6 months + odis +t20s. The only comfort is that rail travel in the uk is comfortable. If the English bowlers dont pick up so many injuries. maybe its time to ask why our bowler do? Are our bowlers eating properly? Do they have the proper support of the physio.

Yeah doubt whether that will work in tests - quicks usually go in with a bit of rhythm and clock 18 odd overs a day. The aussies for sure weren't too happy with their rotation policy - horses for courses hmmm maybe given todays workload but am not a big fan. I prefer full blown across format players even if it means shorter career spans.
Aussies never handles it correctly. India have 6 OK pace bowlers the simple algorithm is 3 first test 3 second test. zak should have never played the second test. On second thought I am not sure if he should have played the first test.

a) we need to improve physio and fitness of our bowlers b) we need to let them adjust to higher levels of activity, cant expect them to bowl infinite overs until exhausted. rotation is good now and then. If you want them to bowl more overs then you need to do it gradually. This is also why we lose bowlers. IPL has fewer overs, more money. If we gave our pacers a short break they can recouperate, train etc. We cant let them feel exhausted. Current lot looks fit anyway: shami, pandey, aaron, bhuvi, yadav

fitness can be misleading. Ie appearances can be deceptive. Just because somebody is not carrying weight/baggage does not mean they have the stamina. Stamina is crucial in cricket. Asian pacers lack that. Even the Pakistani pacers were fast no doubt. However the likes of Akther was perennially injury hit. they need to hit the gym for their shoulders and they need to become marathon runners outside the gym training. Barring Yadav none of the current pacers have muscles. Pandey looks like a softie.

^ Are McGrath, Steyn, Morkel, Hadlee, Ambrose, Gillespie, Donald, Pollock etc. that muscular ? The more important requirements are flexibility, stamina, athleticism, strength etc. The pacers need to train for that.

and reading through the article, Shami is not been effective cause he has not got the ball to reverse when its old. Against the Windies at home he played at Eden Gardens a pitch he knew inside out against a poor opposition. Its not just Shami , indian bowlers dont know how to bowl with the old ball outside the subcontinent. They are heavily dependent on reverse swing.
Reverse swing is the state of the pitch and ground. Moreover, it's a Kookaburra ball not SG.

He is not a rookie. He is 24 as per his cricinfo profile, your not talking about an 18 year old. Look at somebody like Johnson who is 33 and has bowled more balls than shami in the past 3-4 months. somebody like Harris is chugging along at 35 with a bust knee. This is not the time to rest Shami. The way i see it his pace did not drop significantly during both test series. He was around 135 which is his normal speed. So his body is not feeling the effects.
He has bowled more than any you mentioned since Australia series.
