Mohammad Kaif to contest Lok Sabha polls on Congress ticket

its a long term commitment beetle jee. Congress as a party has been around for a long time and probably will be around in the next 10 years. I am sure Kaif wants to climb the ranks of the congress enough to be part of the BCCI via Uttar Pradesh affiliate. Looking at the constituency he is been given, the congress last won there in 1984. That was at a time the local parties or even BJP were not a force. So realistically the chances of him winning this seat even if congress was on the up was slim to nil. Ideally you work yourself up from a seat which is lost cause to a seat which is marginal to a safe seat.

and btw its not just India where this happens. In places like UK on which the Indian system is modelled on the same thing happens. You work yourself up from lost cause to marginal to safe seat. Many dont get part the lost cause and marginal phases. The MP where i live grew up in the north of the country but was offered a safe seat for a political party in the south of the country.

Yup. He's an ambitious, intelligent guy and a good leader. He's definitely aiming for the BCCI. That used to happen in India earlier. Now it seems that constituencies, at least in case of sports persons, bollywood stars etc, are decided on the whims and fantasies of top leaders or on the religion of that particular star/player. Even among the politicians, almost all of them do not want to wait or rise step by step (you will hardly find any MP who started out as a corporator nowadays) - they are all looking for safe constituencies and if they know that they are certain to lose from a certain constituency, they will make all efforts not to get the ticket or they will try to ensure a Rajya Sabha/Vidhan Parishad (in states where there is a Legislative Council) seats beforehand.

problem in the case of Kaif is he is not that big a sports person. i can understand if this was somebody like a Viru who would walk into the Indian all time team your talking about a B grade cricketer. Its reflected in the seat he has been allocated.

yeah, but he's well respected in UP cricket for what he has done for how he the UP Ranji Team transformed under his leadership in the last few years.

If he loses the election, which is very likely, they might send him to the Rajya Sabha. It looks like he wants to get a foot in considering that his international career can be considered as over and possibly even his IPL career.

there is a long list of rajya sabha applicants. Doubt Kaif will get in.

There are 12 members in the Rajya Sabha that are nominated by the President (usually recommended by the Prime Minister) that must have contributed to different fields of art, literature, sports, etc. Sachin Tendulkar got nominated in this manner. However, I agree with you to an extent that Kaif may not even get this nomination since it is unlikely that the Congress will form the next government.
