Shocked at the revelations in the report submitted by the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel in a ‘sealed cover’, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the BCCI president N. Srinivasan to step down on his own to ensure a fair enquiry into the IPL betting allegations. A Bench of Justices A.K. Patnaik and Ibrahim Kalifulla after going through the report in the ‘sealed cover’ made it clear to senior counsel Ariama Sundaram appearing for the BCCI: “You ask Mr. Srinivasan to step down, otherwise we will give our verdict asking him to step down.” Justice Patnaik said “We find that unless the BCCI president steps down, there won’t be a fair enquiry. The man at the top must go. Why are you {Mr. Srinivasan} sticking to the post, it is nauseating. You {Mr. Sundaram} should be honest as a counsel and not as a lawyer for Mr. Srinivasan.” Justice Kalifulla told the counsel “If there has to be a fair and dispassionate enquiry, Mr. Srinivsan must step down.” When Mr. Sundaram said “We have not seen the contents of the report in the sealed cover”, Justice Patnaik asked the counsel to come near the judges’ podium and showed him the conclusions in the report.” Justice Patnaik said “Though there is no definite finding in the report in the sealed cover, the allegations are so serious it require further investigation, which the BCCI can’t do on its own and it has to be done by an outside agency. That’s why we are saying that Mr. Srinivasan must step down for a fair probe.” Justice Patnaik expressing his anguish said “We want to protect the institution of BCCI….. It {betting} happened because people who are in control of BCCI are not taking any action.” When Mr. Sundaram said the BCCI had earned a reputation internationally, Justice Patnaik quipped “Then why don’t you {Mr. Srinivasan} step down to make way for an impartial and dispassionate probe. If you don’t step down we will give a verdict. The problem is you {BCCI} don’t have confidence in the two judges but you have confidence in your man {Mr. Srinivasan}. It is better if he goes on his own. You take instructions from him whether he will step down. We will hear the matter on Thursday.” The Bench then posted the case for further hearing on March 27. The three-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court had held that the role of Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in law of N. Srinivasan, in Chennai Super Kings as the team official and the allegations of betting and passing on information against him stood proved. The report also said "the material on record clearly indicates that Mr. Gurunath was the face of Chennai Super Kings.” However, it said “the allegations of match-fixing require further investigation.” The report also said the fact that Raj Kundra, the Rajasthan Royals team owner, had resorted to betting through Umesh Goenka in the IPL is evident from the statements of Mr. Goenka recorded by the Delhi court. However, it said "further and serious investigations" on the basis of the Mr. Goenka’s statements were required. The panel also gave a report in a ‘sealed cover’ and suggested that the allegations required further probe by an outside agency. It was on the basis of this report the Bench asked Mr. Srinivasan to step down.

Clarke claimed to be the man who could tame Srini and hence got into bed with him. So this is a slap in the face. Donlt forget he also got up close and personal with another crook previously... Giles-Clarke-and-Sir-Alle-001.jpg
Ah thought at that time it was someone else who was heading ECB who teamed with Allen Stanford. I remember though Matt Prior's wife sitting in Stanford's lap in one of the games :giggle:.

Ultimatum served. Two days time to Srini to step down. Good progress regarding spot fixing case. Also, the alleged senior CSK cricketers should be punished aptly once proven guilty. I don't think CSK franchisee will be terminated. When someone does scam in organization , the management is sacked rather than company being closed. Involved cricketers will get banned from IPL and thats it. Rather than just a verdict it is a solution to clean the dirt and dirty people from the game of cricket.
