Gayle vs Sehwag

Technically deficient batsmen tend to have lots of bowled and LBWs - but if you check out Sehwag under overseas conditions, his record reads - 91dismissals 11bowled 8lbw 2 stmp 1 runo 66caught, which is basically 73% caught. Yes, Sehwag has been bowled only 12% and LBW 9% - he is one of the batsmen who has the least percentage of bowled and LBW dismissals. This is not the sign of a technically deficient batsman. He may appear to have some weaknesses like lack of adequate feet movement, but Sehwag overcomes them with his tremendous hand-eye coordination. Compare Sehwag with Tendulkar and Dravid under overseas conditions. Tendulkar 159 dismissed 27bowled 40 lbw 87caught, basically 55% caught Dravid 145 dismissals 27bowled 17lbw 92caught, basically 63% caught. It should be obvious that Sehwag plays one shot too many, and this is why he has a very high percentage of caught dismissals. There are other Indian batsmen like Laxman who have high percentage of caught dismissals, but Laxman does not have the strike rate of Sehwag to consider his dismissals arising from too many shots. On green tops and bouncy conditions, Sehwag has often made it appear that he was batting on a flat track by scoring freely, while others around him found it difficult to survive, let alone make runs. A batsman with several fastest triples and doubles in his name is no ordinary batsman regardless of the conditions.
That's a pretty lame argument. Technical deficinecy is a deficiency. It can be to deliveries coming in going out pitched short or even to full tosses. I have already stated that he had a loose technique outsied his off stump which would mean he would have more catches in slips etc. I am not saying he's ordinary. What are my credentials in life to say that! I am just staying that he was brilliant in conditions which suited him while did averagley in places where it didn't, just like Gayle.

But Sehwag got out a lot while hitting big shots and trying to clear the fence. How is that a technical weakness? That is why he has a number of caught dismissals. Even getting caught at slips in Sehwag's case was mostly due to excessive stroke play, he was an offside player who would not leave too many balls, and saw every width ball as an opportunity to make runs. Comparison with Gayle isn't correct because Sehwag played as fast in tests as Gayle in ODIs. Even Sehwag's strike rates in adverse conditions was usually better than Gayle's strike rates in favourable conditions. Gayles has strike rates less than 60 in six countries, while Sehwag's strike rates exceeds 65 every where, and is less than 75 in only two countries. These two batsmen weren't taking the same amount of risk while batting, Sehwag's batting was far more risky than Gayle, yet Sehwag has a superior average. Sehwag >> Gayle Again, if Sehwag was getting out outside of the SC due to distinct technical deficiencies, there should be evidence that he would be getting dismissed repeatedly by the top bowlers of these nations, especially since Sehwag is an opener. But Sehwag often lost his wicket to lesser bowlers in the side, trying to blow them apart - his dismissal was effected by spinners many times in condiitons that are not SC like, and often by medium pacers whom Sehwag did not bother to give respect. Sehwag batted at a strike rate less than 60 in only 30% of his innings played even in adverse conditions - his case is of 'One who lives by the sword, dies by the sword" and not a case of one who does not know hot to use the sword.

So, you are trying to imply that every single time Sehwag got out, he was holed out? I frankly believe that bar a few occasions, he has been out in the slips or caught by the keeper. Don't have the data to back it up though.

Now that is quite true for all batsmen playing out the SC. The issue with Sehwag is that he some times gets out to upper cuts to third man, return catch to bowler, or holing out on the leg side - these are typical ODI dismissals but in test matches top batsmen do not generally get out this way early in the innings. The frequency of such dismissals for Sehwag is higher than for most other top batsmen because Sehwag plays too many shots.
