Gayle vs Sehwag

I had to open this comparison as after today's innings a lot of newer fans might think of Gayle as a hack in the same league of his teammates like Smith,Pollard etc. A lot of newer fans might also know Gayle for his IPL and T20 exploits but I have always rated Chris Gayle the total batsman Test+ODI+T20 in the same league or maybe a notch below as Sehwag. Obviously in T20 Gayle emerges the clear winner and in Tests it is Sehwag but nothing much to seperate these two in ODI's. People may write off Gayle the test player but Gayle pre-IPL days scored in all countries,has 2 300'sand played some fantastic innings in Aus and S.A like his 100 from 70 odd balls in perth etc. Also Sehwag had a batting line up of SRT,R.D,VVS,Ganguly etc and a more stable opening partner in Gambhir where as Gayle was a one man opening show and had Lara and Chanderpaul. Bowling wise Indian bowling was better as a unit during Sehwag's success compared to the team Gayle had. So who is better?

Also he has played some terrific innings against Aus,S.A and England on their turf. He averages nearly 50 in Aus and S.A,2 best bowling attacks of the last decade.Sehwag averages in Aus are comparable but he has a very mediocre record in S.A in Eng both have been mediocre but Gayle has done much better than Viru. in Nzl Gayle has an average way above Sehwag. Gayle has a mediocre-average record in S.C averages in the 30's where as Sehwag has some beastly averages against Pak and SL

One thing where Sehwag trumps Gayle is S/R....Sehwag has an 80+ S/R after 104 tests which is unheard of where as Gayle is not the same kind of crazy hitter he is in LOI's....he has a more modest S/R of nearly 60 which is still superb but 80 in tests is something else.

Against spin he is very poor compared to Viru. Viru plays a high risk game. He lives and dies by the sword. Gayle is more a percentage cricketer. Against pace bowler he is much more at ease. He uses his height well to negate bouncier wickets. But he can't dominate like Viru dominates

He has an incredible S/R and a terrific average,so I wnt jump on the padosi bandwagon and call him flattrack Bully but as per stats he has absolutely dominated our padosis on both sides ,but Gayle has done better than him everywhere elseat a pretty reasonable test S/R of 60. Gayle has failed to step up in S.C against all 3 teams despite him having a 300 in SL.

Sehwag, at his peak, was the better batsman while Gayle was the more destructive batsman. Tests - Sehwag>Gayle ODIs - Gayle>Sehwag

Don't even have to mention about lunatics like Afridi who chop wood irrespective of format, situation, bowler and condition. Sehwag, when he was in prime, went over all the bowlers with class. Gayle's downfall as a batsman began during that period when he was constantly ignored by the selectors after the issue over that comments he made on a radio program. Was never very consistent and neither did he pose the sort of threat like Viru did against the opposition bowlers. Don't be fooled by his T20 records. He wasn't half as dominate in ODI, as he is in T20s. Good, but not dominant. But as mentioed in the OP, Gayle has scored runs against better sides at higher average. Also, he isn't all that great against a team which has got a good spin attack. Likes the pace on the bat. Its a no brainer in Test cricket. Overall Sehwag easily edges him but agree with Maniac, Gayle was miles better than what he is now. Honestly, he has become a joke by playing in almost all the leagues around the globe, looks uncertain in Test cricket. Hasn't played a lot of ODIs since his return. As a spectator I don't really fear him now when he is up against India, nevermind the format, i.e. T20 included. In the past 2-3 years, Gayle, while playing for Windies has rarely looked unstoppable. You can contain him quiet effortlessly. Probably their best bat (in all formats) since Lara's departure.
