Vaseline isn't all that ideal for an*l.
There is limited data out on how different lubricants affect the an*l mucosa. Obviously if you are not using latex condoms there is no conncern with the oil breaking down the latex. The little data has a lot to do with the fact that anything related to the anus/rectum, especially concerning sex is not well funded. There was recently (within the past year) a questionnaire sent out looking at the "most-used" an*l lubricants to find out which ones to look at/ test first. I have not seen any responses as of yet. However, on the surface, it seems that vaseline is safe to use in the anus/rectum. I would still recommend you use a water-based lubricant, but as long as condoms are not a factor and will not be used in the day or so after this encounter (residual vaseline in the anus may affect a condom used in the recent future) then vaseline is 'safe'. Vaseline is also safe for condoms made from polyurethane as oils will not degrade polyurethane. Future research may shed more light on different lubricants and their effects relating to HIV/STI transmission.
