pace92 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If we're including players from 70s and 80s and if some one has access to videos or description of Waseem Raja's tour of West Indies in 1975-76, you will realize there has not been a better hooker than him. Gavaskar and Amarnath, along with Majid Khan, Waseem Raja and Inzimam has been the best players of hostile fast bowling but Gavaskar, Jimmi and Inzi were OK hookers nothing special.

So till then, i don't care much for awesome powers of concentration against Bangladesh or at home where the pitches really suit his style of batting. Kallis, i will admit is the behemoth of concentration but as you said, its the combination of all that makes God...well, God. He is the only batsman of the modern era to end up averaging atleast 40+ everywhere he played. Only batsman to have multiple tours of RSA, England and Australia where he dominated their bowling. He is not quite the concentration monster Kallis was, but he is bloody close. And unlike Kallis, Tendulkar is a much more complete batsman who's dominated ATG bowling attacks- something Kallis notoriously failed at when Wasim-Waqar or Ambrose-Walsh or McWarne were around. Desilva is simply not in that class of batsmanship because he was not good at concentration. He was good in his strokeplay, yes but Tendulkar has that aspect covered quite easily over deSilva. Allround strokeplay, there is none more complete than Tendulkar to've played the game. That includes Bradman. For Bradman never ramped the ball over the slips. When you combine it all: success against the best, success against the best in their backyard, allround success at home and away, longetivity, range of strokeplay, consistency and such factors, there is only one batsman from the last 20+ years that ticks all the boxes: Tendulkar. to me tendulkar wasnt really the best in anything but he did most things reasonably well so he's considered a top 5 batsmen of his era. kallis is similar. i rate kallis and tendulkar as being equal as both of them don't really have the the same number of iconic, match changing knocks that some of the other greats of that era have. kallis might have a few more but he loses some points to tendulkar on style. 40+ average thing is nice but it's not a determining factor to me when it comes to ranking players. sanga has suffered because he wasnt allowed a chance to play in these countries while at his peak.

Another so called potentially 'better than Sachin' batsman according to Pakistanis. They only take random names like Sanga, Aravinda, Ponting, Lara etc. to make themselves feel better, so that they don't have to live with a conscience that Sachin was the best batsman because he is an Indian. Its just a jealousy element..nothing else. I mean lets face it, when a country who is yet to produce a 10K run getter in test cricket have to cling on to batsman of other nations to make themselves feel good. They cannot touch their own barrel as its pretty empty. BTW Umar Akmal might get 10K test runs...because he is POTENTIALLY better than Kohli. Definition of potential is different as per Lahori logic compared to Oxford dictionary.
