CG Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Its requires a balancing act ,so what do u think are policy decisions which would be taken. What will he do with subsidies.
surajmal Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Big portion of the inflation is because of food. So, shape up food corporation of India; build the needed infra: cold storage, etc on a war footing. This is for the near term. For the long term: river interlinking project is extremely important. Gujarat and MP have been at it for the last little while. Modi needs to get the rest of the states onboard quickly. And basically implement whatever agricultural practices Andhra and Gujarat have been working with, over rest of India. NREGA needs to be refocused for Infrastructure labour. Cap food security bill as a percentage of GDP. Cut fuel subsidies gradually. Ditch the land acquisition act of 2013. End Retro taxation. 2 most important things for manufacturing sector (in addition to cutting the time required to acquire all of necessary clearances): Labour reform + Roads/Electricity (<<< Clearly the biggest need of the country as a whole). PPP is the obvious path for building the necessary infra since Congis are leaving behind a massive deficit. Disinvestment in floundering PSUs. There are a few financial reforms as well: like recapitalization of public sector banks, insurance/pension FDI, GST. Widen the tax net. Just to name a few. Pie in the sky wish: Modi is able to bring back a big chunk of the black money. Will solve a lot of the problems.
BeautifulGame Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Modernize Agri sector and increase productivity. Reduce Red tape and increase investments in infrastructure and other sectors.M Reduce the funds to subsidies like MNRGE schemes which cause fiscal deficit gradually. He cant stop all the Congress subsidies abruptly. More investment in power sector and Nuclear power plants. Most of Rural India should atleast have minimum of 18 hours power supply imo. That should be the target. Steer us more towards manufacturing sector more like China. We cant keep relying solely on service sector and keep expecting 10% GDP growth And so on. One would assume he would atleast need 2-3 years to revive the economy and properly implement these reforms.
BeautifulGame Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Need to reform Railways as well.Crucial to our economy. Modi's two key priorities should be to reform and modernize Agriculture sectors and railways.
surajmal Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Need to reform Railways as well.Crucial to our economy. Modi's two key priorities should be to reform and modernize Agriculture sectors and railways. Railways should be merged with Transport.
bulbul Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Railways should be merged with Transport. No no. First priority should be fright corridors..imrpoving current railroads is difficult task.New corridor will help a lot.
surajmal Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 No no. First priority should be fright corridors..imrpoving current railroads is difficult task.New corridor will help a lot. delhi mumbai corridor buildup is already underway. For the long term, India needs to establish a holistic policy for the transport system (rail, road, air, water). Now is a good time as any.
Detonator Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 He can start with bringing back fuel regulation and reduce the diesel and petrol price.
Detonator Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Need to reform Railways as well.Crucial to our economy. Modi's two key priorities should be to reform and modernize Agriculture sectors and railways. Absolutely. 10 yrs ago, we transport everything on freight and goods trains regularly. Now most business and exports are forced to be done on roadways due to unavailability to trains. It reduces profits, increases the cost of everything. I have seen 100's of trucks carrying vegetables in palakkad checkpost, going from TN to kerela. Truck transportation is more expensive than trains and it's reflected in the selling price.
kubrickian Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Improve infrastructure on a war footing. Build new cities, build more highways, improve the state of railways, ports, nuclear power plants and ensure steady generation of electric power. This will help bring more foreign investment and also improve the functioning of industries and businesses in India. Also building more cold storage facilities for food grains and better connectivity of roads will reduce wastage. Millions of tons of food is currently getting rotted in godowns across India. Modernize agriculture and find ways to improve agricultural output. Manufacturing sector needs a boost which can create lots of jobs. Improve education levels and see that welfare schemes are reaching the poor and reduce malnutrition and improve health which in turn will make them capable of doing jobs. All this will improve the economy. The problem in India though is corruption and the hurdles put across by vested interests. It will be a huge challenge to get over them. Many people know what needs to be done but they just care about themselves and not the larger interest and what's good for the country.
Precambrian Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 delhi mumbai corridor buildup is already underway. For the long term' date=' India needs to establish a holistic policy for the transport system (rail, road, air, water). Now is a good time as any.[/quote'] Agree, there should be a cohesive policy merging these structures together, wherein instead of acting independently, all four structures try and complement the other.
Precambrian Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 He can start with bringing back fuel regulation and reduce the diesel and petrol price. Is it really needed? Of course, unwanted taxes should be taken out, but I don't agree with this artificial shielding - people must understand the benefits of public transport and start adopting them more and more - of course its not going to happen overnight, but states must be advised and impressed upon to improve local road transport.

Again money - Development in all terms must be state sponsored and promoted in the beginning but must be able to sustain themselves. How? Again how? What are the specifics? This is true, hence the need to inculcate the feeling of nationalism.. One good thing is that PMO has already started installing its own "regional" offices in every state capital - thereby bringing the union govt closer to people, and also thereby "inducing" sense of competition with local state govt apparatus. I think that is just brilliant! and novel.

Agree but the fuel price is ever increasing since the puppet MMS cancelled the fuel price regulation, which primarily benefits the oil tycoons such as reliance and indian oil. It's a duty of the govt to set the fuel prices, not a bunch of businessmen.

It's a duty of the govt to set the fuel prices, not a bunch of businessmen.[/quote'] it doesn't benefit reliance afaik.. their oil retailing has never really taken off - even after regulation.. the point is, state cannot artifically control prices for too long, especially when the quantum of it is this high.. eventually it will reach a tipping point. what we need is sustainable development. govt can go on an investing/spending spree by building roads, floyovers, and what nots, but finally all this have a price. similarly, people need to understand that petrol prices aren't going down - they need to be educated to use it less, and get on public transportation more.

Untill namo strengthens the rupee its going to be that way this oil baron business is just a straw man in all this debate. You have the rupee sliding to 65 and no matter what you do the prices will rocket.

Its better if the government open up infra to international cos and let him bid to operate projects. Indians need to get out of this mentality of asking to government to build stuff. Our fiscal position was detoriated so badly under UPA 2 that India needs a macroeconomic solution than a microeconomic one. The number 1 priroity is to sure up the balance of payments. Imports have surged ahead of exports. While roads and rails are a long term fix. The short term immediate need to is sure up this gap via incentives to NRIs and FDI increases.
kubrickian Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 How? Again how? What are the specifics? To boost agriculture, some of the things they can do is interlinking of rivers to provide water for cultivation, educating farmers on different techniques of farming and how to use land and resources more effectively and how to use technology, providing regular electricity, also investing more in agricultural sector etc. Less emphasis should be put on freebies and sops which end up not being utilized well. When it comes to industries, as mentioned above, infrastructure has to be improved, red tape has to be reduced to start a business in India, also government needs to ensure India is a more attractive investment destination than other countries for foreign investors.
