Have you ever encountered stereotypes of people from different regions of India? If so how true are they? Here's my contribution. Bengalis: Intellectual, argumentative, obsessed with fish. Punjabis: Loud, uncouth, always swearing. South Indians: laid back, passive I'm not endorsing any of these, they're just the ones I've come across. I can only really comment on the Bengali stereotype. There's some truth in it. We have a great reverence for people such as Rabindranth Tagore (Thakur) and Satyajit Ray and there's a wealth of Bengali language literature. Personally, I hate fish though!

Biharis were more argumentative of all and some of them were very street smart (Delhites came close in latter category too). Bengalis were more prone to having long winding conversations about all kinds of stuff under the sun. Gults from what I observed, were very easy going but tended to stay in their groups, and were the most cricket crazy :hehe:

I have had a chance to closely mingle with Bengalis, gults, biharis. Biharis were more argumentative of all and some of them were very street smart (Delhites came close in latter category too). Bengalis were more prone to having long winding conversations about all kinds of stuff under the sun. Gults from what I observed, were very easy going but tended to stay in their groups, and were the most cricket crazy :hehe: How true:winky: And Singhs are the biggest drinkers I've ever encountered.

I stated a personal opinion based on empirical evidence. I've personally never seen anyone drink as much alcohol as Sikh men. I've already said that I don't endorse stereotypes and I've stated the stereotypes I've come across.

By the way who are Gults? But one thing I always felt comfortable with guys from the big cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore. :icflove:

I too was guilty of it in my first year, it was more like I got sucked in. But later years I started socializing with everyone.:icflove:

Also a lot of the Singhs I've met are by their own admission big drinkers.

Texy Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 gujjus are business people...and that part is mostly true.... although there are exceptions...in US...gujjus own motels, hotels, gas stations, patel brothers...all kinds of stuff... they're very business prone punjabis are loud and eat a lot...punjabi women are gorgeous! all true bengalis are academic, into politics and highly intellectual mostly, bengalis love their food (mostly true) and bengali women are very voluptous (also mostly true).. there are always exceptions south indians also very academic, very docile and quiet types...true mostly but I have seen south indians drunk of their bums and partying hard... south indian women are gorgeous too bengali food beats the crap out of any other Indian cuisine..... elish maach vapored, alur dom, alu posto, muri ghonto, mishti doi, chom chom, egg roll, phuchka......omggg

Dum Aloo is a Kashmiri dish AFAIK. and Egg roll is chinese :hehe: Dude, if bengali food is all that great, why is it not available anywhere else in India ? rahuliverpool Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 The most amazing bit is of Punjabi's being loud. The Punjabis you see on tv/films are unreal! Very few speak like that! I am a Punjabi and being from Delhi, I know tons of Punjabis and trust me most of us are not loud/vulgar/abusive. Some are, no doubt, but the whole community cannot be termed loud as such! As far as eating is concerned, yes, ham khate peete log hai :haha:

Any explanation ? :hmmmm2: Exactly, p_k. Barring Bengal, I do not remember having been to a single shop with Bengali food elsewhere in India. The sweets/MISHHHHTI is all we see.
