LOS ANGELES: Google is building a car without a steering wheel. Sergey Brin, co-founder of the technology titan, told a Southern California tech conference on Tuesday evening that Google will make 100 prototype cars that drive themselves and therefore do not need a wheel. Or brake and gas pedals. Instead, there are buttons for go and stop. A combination of sensors and computing power takes the driving from there. To date, Google has driven hundreds of thousands of miles on public roads with Lexus SUVs and Toyota Priuses outfitted with the special equipment. This prototype is the first Google will have built for itself. It won't be for sale, and Google is unlikely to go deeply into auto manufacturing. In a blog post, the company emphasized partnering with other firms

As a concept, isnt it just fan-bleeding-tastic? Imagine a world where you could get in your car, plug in your destination address and simply do whatever you want - Read, watch movies, talk on cell phones, sleep even! This has the potential to transform the way we travel.

Another thing Sergey Brin talked about was how if there were far fewer traditional cars on the roads - whenever you need to go somewhere you just call a self driving car (using an app), the car drives itself to your place, drops you off to your destination and goes for its next job - this can save fuel, prevent accidents, reduce parking space needed etc.

Don't mean to sound racist, but Asian women need to get these cars -- I am pretty sure that will improve road safety and reduce accidents on the streets of USA.

The most visionary company in the world.
Not really. Audi, lexus, BMW etc. have all been working on their autonomous car systems behind the scenes for years now. Now this is innovative: MX76RyZulI8 dragon%20landing.gif Google is just full of nerds. Elon Musk is the ultimate dreamer.

Like someone said, there are already others working on driveless cars. If it will happen then it will be a gradual process, like lane driving, parking (which is common now), driver fatigue detection, auto braking etc. It won't be easy for google, auto industry requires massive capital investment. Google will be better developing the software and control system behind autonomous drive, rather than building a car from scratch.

I am not talking about just this project. They have many other such projects (what Sergey Bring calls Moon Shots) going on which have the potential to bring about a lot of change - Modular Phones, Google Fiber, providing internet through balloons - project loon, smart contact lenses that can measure diabetes, Google Glass etc. Google is, without any doubt, the world's most visionary company in the world currently. The worrying thing about them is the amount of data they have about the users.

Currently their plan seems to be this.

Nothing "visionary" about those projects. Got to use the mountain of cash lying around somewhere. On the other hand, with Space race heating up once again and electric cars as the future , Elon Musk's future wealth will rival Rockefellers and Carnegies. (that is if Elon Musk stays more edison and less Tesla. You never know with these dreamer types) Google will come back down as MS did. 21st century money lies in Space, alternate energy and Biotech. IT will become a supplementary field.

Not a great idea not to have steering wheel at all. It would be better to have a steering wheel and an option for autopilot or manual drive.

Google you fvcking monster. Way to take everything to the next level Whatever will happen to the fun of driving! In 2035 - "Back in the day, they had this wheel shaped thing to steer the car manually"
