He played the warmup and two Tests, but yet to find his rhythm. I don't know how many more overs/matches he needs to "come back". Unless he was slacking the whole two months... OTOH, the Australian pace trio start delivering within the first or second game after a long break.

Siraj has a flaw in his action and that messes with his pace and rhythm, his foot collapses at the delivery point and he has not worked on it during all these years. Tyagi has an issue with his action, and that messes with his back and hence a history of injury and stop gap career.

These bowlers are a valuable asset but our bowler management and selections have been poor.

I would have Gurnoor, Shami, Bumrah, Ashok also bring in the left hander Naman Tiwari, Mayank and Umran along with Tyagi and rotate them, form a pool.

Hardly played FC to be selected, selecting them is hard when they have not played any fc games. the backlash on nabi non-selection was massive,

Specially when zonal selection means selecting the best performers from fc for that season. And none of these players have played any sc game.

Kounain Qureishi making his First Class debut today in a Duleep Trophy game.

Run of the mill off spinner.

Surely nobody would complain if Tyagi and Mayank, bowling 147 kph+, were selected for Duleep Trophy.

Zeeshan is also selected, without playing red ball cricket for 4 years.

Suryavanshi is also made vice captain

This guy deserves preferential treatment and should be fast tracked.
Also isn’t ipl supposed to be our premium T20 competition? He performed good in the ipl - among the top wicket takers.

The LEAST these morons can do is select him in T20s right now.

In 6 years with only 4 FC and 20 list A matches, he has less than 1 FC match a year. just over 3 List A matches a year. Even T20s, including IPL 84, that’s 14 a year, max 56 overs only, In T20 a bowler only bowls 4 overs in not the most friendly conditions. Also, it's not about just quantity, it's also about quality. Someone who bowls 150 overs in a domestic calendar in T20 cricket is not the same as a player who bowls 150 overs in domestic calendar in FC. FC teaches you to bowl longer spells, it teaches you to bowl with attacking mindset and get wickets, whereas in T20 you can have burst of 2 overs and then rest, you bowl with mindset of stopping runs on flat wickets than looking to get batsman out as a primary objective. He is 25 now, this is the time where he should have hit his prime as a fast bowler for the next 7-8 years, but he has not played, you can't blame national selectors for not looking at him, even if they know he has potential, that is a call they have to take, but they definitely can't take it based on data, it then has to be subjective, and it is difficult fault someone on subjective calls.

A selector's job is not merely to look at stats, data analysis based evidence is a part of their job, but there are other important aspects as well like experience, ability to judge a talent etc, it's not that selectors don't make decisions based on judgement, they do, a young player shows up and they judge he has talent, selectors do and have taken calls in the past, but those are subjective and judgemental calls, you can't blame someone for not making that call, because not every call is subjective, they are often smaller in number, the majority of the way selectors judge is through talent and how has he/she performed, what are their numbers, where have they played, agains which opposition, in what conditions etc, and then they take the call, in that circumstance a player is doing exceedingly well and is talented, it becomes much difficult for selector to justify why the player is not being selected, but not when they just have to rely on judgement.

The point is if a player has had opportunity and their numbers don't match up, it's upto the selectors, if they feel he can do better it's their call, there have been instances where player did will at international level than they did at domestic cricket, or they can take a call, we don't think he is ready or not living up to potential, but that at least gives people a fair chance, evidence to selectors.

You, I and others here might hope he gets picked, but the probability of that happening is low, and the question shouldn’t be on selectors, it should be on the system that is failing, if selectors become scapegoat, the system inefficiencies gets masked.

Tyagi kept getting shin injuries. Other injuries too. It's quite common among some young fast bowlers.

Cummins could not play from 2012 to early 2017 due to chronic injuries.

Often, as we saw with Cummins, many of these pacers suddenly become very fit after they become 24 / 25.

Past is past. If there is an express pacer fit to play, he should play for his state and zone.

1: What you’ve outlined are very outdated ways of selection. The requirements for test cricket are completely different than what’s required in the shorter formats. Tyagi has shown enough evidence this year that he can sustain very high speeds in T20s and has good control over skills. I would in fact argue that a season IPL offers you more exposure than playing domestic T20s for a decade - if T20 experience is what you’re looking for (I don’t rate ipl highly due to pitches but saying).

2: No one is blaming selectors for not selecting him 2 years back. I’m talking about NOW. If at 25 when he’s at his peak, you ask him to toil in domestics for a few years - then you’re gonna lose a 150k bowler who’s tall and finally showing signs of maturity to the system - an absolute shame n downright stupid. Often you won’t even get selected due to team politics n experience

3: A selectors job is to choose players who have the highest likelihood of succeeding in international cricket. Experience is one aspect of it. And their job is to select by being cognizant of the format. Their job is NOT thinking what others would think why XYZ got selected. A 150k bowler who’s tall, has variations, ability to withstand pressure, succeed in a whole ipl season with ridiculous pitches is good enough reason - it will be good enough for most countries.

That is one of the biggest factors in selection these days.

Otherwise why would they pick Nabi for the slow tracks in SL ?  Why is Harsh Dubey getting selected ? Why was Kamboj picked last year ? Why did Karun Nair make a comeback ?

Shami bowling 130 k to 135 k mostly. saw one at 137 k. About 7 kph to 10 kph slower than his usual speeds.

Just 1 wicket in 3 innings so far in Duleep Trophy.

This is not the Shami we know.

But still way better than 125 k Siraj.

I haven't watched him in this tournament, but he might have been too good for North East batters in the previous match. There were probably many deliveries that better quality batters would have edged behind, inside edged on to the stumps, etc. I'd look at metrics like plays and misses and false shots induced rather than wickets.

Guys like Kamboj and Auqib get a lot of wickets at the domestic level as they do just enough to find the edges, but that skill level would be considered pedestrian at the international level.

Archer hits Saud on the shoulder then follows up with 148k. Then bowls another 148k and hits Masood on his midriff. Then bowls another 149k that bounces sharply and keeps rising till the keeper grabs it. Fantastic stuff.

Even Atkinson - I watched the last over of his spell. Every ball was 140-143. That’s quicker than what he was bowling a few months back.

Everyone should watch Archers dismissal of Babar. Ball was short, batsman tries to hook in an awkward position with head slanting back. Gets top edge and then smack his head / face and gets caught in the slips. Proper bullying using pace.

Kounaain and Viabhav are two uncapped players in FC still and the DT bth from jkd team. not sure why they are selected without much exp.

This may look odd but Tyagi playing upt20 and cranking up speeds of 150+ kmph , may help him more to get into Ind set-up than this DT.

Think it was irani trhy couple of seasons back , Sen bowled with pace and got multiple wkts think Umran was also there (if it was the same game) he bowled with pace and got wkt and Ind selected Mukesh into the side and he was selected pom

While watching Shami bowl today, I was basically trying to figure out whether it makes sense to bring him back to Team India, given the fact that his actual age is almost 39 now.

While he is still threatening to the domestic batsmen, his sharp drop in pace does not bode well for an international comeback.

Shami/Bhuvi are highly skilled bowlers they will trouble domestic batters even at low pace, they know how to set-up a better. Their time is done at intnl level, its okay if they want to continue and play in ipl or even domestics.

The complete lack of planning is showing-up now that Ind kept loosing 3/4 top bowlers and they did not introduce anyone and added low potential bowlers.

Ind has no-one only options left is ask siraj and bhumrah to play and perform every game , Bhumrah can not play all the games its a know issue now. He has to be rested on away tours and siraj is on decline and Ind has no options.

Avesh/mukesh/thakur/Undakat/saini who they were thinking can step-up to world class level ???
