I end up helping India more from here
Bull$hit. Simply dumping money into your desi account is nowhere comparable to LIVING somewher, getting involved in life there and making your tangiable contributions to SOCIETY there. Make no mistake, you, bossbhai, etc. are all hypocrites. Because while you like to potray yourself as the India-lover patriots, bottomline is, you guys ditched India for personal monetary gain.

CC dude, why the needless unprovoked personal attacks? Please refrain.

How many of you think that it is 'patriotic' to stay back in India in present time and fight it out there rather than being 'unpatriotic' and have flown out for greener pastures?
It is more patriotic to stay back in India yes. My personal conviction is rather simple on this one. 1) I didnt come to USA to help India, end of story. Yes I do some good from here but that happened, I am not gonna take any credit for that. 2) Countries like US/UK have benefitted immensly from talents like me. And India has obviously lost on this talent. In the end it is about comfort and I am not exactly happy to admit that. Now dont follow it with a "What the hell are you doing in USA then?" xxx

And what makes you think ACTUALLY living in one place is the ONLY way to contribute to that society ?

It is possible to contribute a lot to the upliftment of society by sending money from abroad. One can do so by sponsoring an underprivileged kid's education using CRY India or donating to an NGO for women's upliftment or donating to charities working for the earthquake/tsunami affected.

Fight what? I end up helping India more from here' date=' but still for my own mental peace I wud like to move back. Despite all the problems and trust me I get nothing but problems there I still can't let it go..[/quote'] Sorry to hijack the thread. But my intention was to throw off guys who answered in the affirmative to the OP. I believe that people who stayed back proactively have a bit of a higher standing on the patriotic stakes than those who flew out. If you couldn't stand the 'free' India how could you have fought for a 'free' India, is the debatable point. But I guess that's stuff for another thread.

It wasn't meant to be personal but directed to ALL NRIs who thump their chest for being 'proud desh-bhakt' Indians. IMO, they get that complex because once they come to America and find that they are outnumbered 100:1, reality sinks in, insecurity pops up and they withdraw in what they know- India and Indian pride- to compensate for their social inadequacies. It really is not that strange a phenomenon to see immigrants being more nationalistic than the average back home, especially when these immigrants are glory-hunters there to make money, not envisioning retirement in these parts.

It is nowhere comparable to having the SOCIAL impact by SOCIAL interactions living in a society, unless you are literally dumping millions. But 50-60 thousand dollars in your account earning interest ? Sure, that does something, but nowhere close to what someone with your qualifications living in INDIA is doing for India.
And what makes you think ACTUALLY living in one place is the ONLY way to contribute to that society ?
Did you get that from my post ? For i didn's say it- what i said is living in one place and getting involved there FAR OUTSTRIPS putting tidbit chump-change money into bank accounts back home.

Thats all one can do. In the end it all becomes about money one way or the other for an expat. I tend to think that if the best brains remained in a country, and they could identify with a cause that would be inherently better than the same set of people leaving India. The problem with much of our generation is that we don't have a cause. Indeed this is a very pertinent point with pre-partition India. Then people were fighting with British not because they did not have the option to catch the next boat to other country far away. Nope. It was because they could identify with a cause - to kick away the occupant - and came under Freedom Struggle umbrella. xxx

Point taken. But sure you are smart enough to realize that your tone will only add to the vitriol? Why not ask your pointed questions without being pointy Bongo?

I find this quite strange. How is being an NRI and being patriotic mutually exclusive? We aren't talking about 2nd gen people. We are talking about people born in India and who have moved abroad. What's wrong in feeling patriotic despite not living in your country? And what social inadequacies are you talking about? Do you even think before you type?

LOL@glory hunters. You are quite judgemental aren't you. What if some move because of the lack of money at home? What if some move because their companies transferred them? What if some move because they want to gain some international experience before returning? You seem to see things in black and white. Quite immature.

It is not incomparable. If an NRI contributes to charities/sponsors a kid and visits India once a year to see whether his money is making a difference, then that has an impact. To brush it aside as if it's nothing like you have done is inaccurate.

Because patriots don't abandon their country for greener pastures of personal financial gain. And if they do, they arn't patriots.
And what social inadequacies are you talking about?
Inadequacy in 'fitting in' with the society here.

Good for them if they do all that- and i have nothing against them, except when they try to potray themselves as great patriots of mother India. That is nothing but B$ of the highest order, said only to reinforce their 'indian-ness' in their minds and justify their money-lust over desh-bhakti, despite claiming the opposite.
If an NRI contributes to charities/sponsors a kid and visits India once a year to see whether his money is making a difference, then that has an impact.
Ofcourse it has an impact- i said so myself ! But what i ALSO said is that it is NOWHERE the impact of staying in the country and working for its benifit. An electrical engineer who LIVES in INDIA and earns 30,000 rupees per month is doing FAR MORE for INDIA than an EE living in the States earning 10,000 dollars a month. Its fairly straightforward and i refuse to take any of these 'i am a patriot but i left India for more $$' talk seriously...coz it is nothing more than self-justification and make-believe.

If somoene is wrokig in west how did u conclude from that that he cud not stand free india.... Help me out there.... You fight when there is something to be fought for.. You do not remain in perennial agitated state to show that you can fight when time comes....Apparently ur premise here is that there is sthg to be fought against hence my question, fight what..... All those little fights of social upliftment I have been fightiong better from here than when I was there .. If my radar missed any glaring fight whihc cud only be done by being parked over there then do let us know..

That's ur own insecurity talking so speak for yourself.. rest have not abandoned anything.. What is next baseless accusation: because u left ur village to earn lliving hence u are village traitor.. U left ur parents to go to hostel for studies hence u are faimly traitor.. :hysterical:

Please tell us how. Bottomline : When you chose to come to the west, it was for YOUR personal gain, NOT for any other reason. When you leave motherland for personal gain, you cannot be a patriot. Its pretty straightforward, regardless of how you see it yourself. My philosophy is simple - i will support the land/culture that is sustaining me. Right now, i owe far more to Canada than to India, so if push came to shove, i will pick Canada over India. This is the country that foots my healthcare bills, not India. This is the country that employs me and puts food on my table, not India. I owe far more to Canada than to India and if you've been here for 5-10 years, its true in your case too.

Insecurity of what ? I don't HAVE a patriotic bone in me and i do not hide it- there is no insecurity there. And yes, you've abandoned India for living in the west because of PERSONAL gain....i aint saying that is wrong, nothing wrong with it infact- but don't be a hypocrite and pretend to be a patriot when the charm of money is enough for you to ditch India and go to the west.
What is next baseless accusation: because u left ur village to earn lliving hence u are village traitor.. U left ur parents to go to hostel for studies hence u are faimly traitor.
No, that is not a logical argument, since i never called you lot traitors either. This reflects the black-n-white binary mind of yours, where if you are not a patriot, you must be a traitor. That is not true- there are people in between- the indifferent ones, either in thought, in action or both. And yes, its pretty retarded to claim you love your village like a sacchha villager when you ditched it for the city to make more $$. As for parents example- completely irrelevant, since we cannot compare personal familial interactions with interactions with nation/land/city/village.

Don't feel bad:cantstop: (1) my take is you were most probably not thinking or doing any good for india while being in india either other than paying tax..... Why that stand sud suddenly change just because u came here.. Yes had u been doing sthg and u aborted that for coming to usa then I might see ur point (2) Now when u came here has ur monetary contribution to govt coffer or some NGO or other organization dwindled or increased..........Ask this question and then judge urself Bongo is classic case of: rolling stone gathers no moss.. He has no attachment to any place and he likes to believe whole world is like that so that he cud feel little less less about himself.. hence this wider brush and bla bla bla over expatraites this expatraites that

nothing torn off..i just refuse to entertain Gambo's disingenousness....the moment i saw him say ' this is what you said about Ubuntu on Nov 8, this is what you said on Oct 10th', i knew its pointless- since he ignores the FACT that i've made MANY posts about Ubuntu, saying essentially the same, for the better part of a year now, in the relevant threads, so him drawing a parallel is utterly pointless, since i did not make a one-off comment on the issues he is trying to draw a chronology to.
More powers to u, Bongo
muchos gracias.

hahaha. Yes, i wanna feel a little 'less' about myself, since people do go around trying to feel 'less about themselves'. :haha:
and he likes to believe whole world is like that
No i do not think the whole world is like that. What i think is, its silly and blatantly hypocritical to argue about how patriotic you are or potray yourself as a patriot when the bottomline is you ditched your nation for more money in a foreign land. And considering that i don't think patriotism is a value worth persuing (which i've already stated many times), you cannot allege this to be my efforts to 'feel good about myself' either...i am NOT a patriot, never will be one...i realize there are patriots, but patriots don't ditch their country for $$, is all i gotto say.
