His test stats are overrated by playing against very weak bowling attacks in Zim and Eng at home. He was badly exposed by the WI for his short falls against the short ball. And dropped subsequently IIRC .

Come, one series is nowhere to judge that, and I remember some of his short problems were during the time he broke his hand

So how many batsmen scored double 100 against those weak attacks? Talent doesnt mean you cannot have weakness. Weakness can be worked upon with hard work which he lacked.

ha! Everytime I argue, this is the counter argument I get. Obviously I do not have an answer. All I can tell you is even Gillespie has a 200, Akram and Agarkar have 100s. To me Talent is a combination of factors including technique. Only thing Kambli did good, was he was a sweet striker of the ball. And when he did it, he looked like gold. He was not evaluated and tested properly before he was pushed into the squad and even after he was pushed he should have been sent -- right back to domestic cricket. Big reason why he was pushed into limelight -- he had that Harris Shield Record to his name and that too with a person called Sachin at the other end, and this person Sachin was already making waves in International Circuit -- so everybody assumed Kambli was same. Big Mistake ! Other talented guys who were making waves but were not drafted into International Circuit because they were found out not long after -- Sishir Hattangadi (not sure if you know him) and Amol Majumdar -- at least Amol had all the ingredients -- just not the attitude. And rightly they were not drafted in.

Early on Kambli had talent but it looked like success was definitely creating diversions for him. He got dumped for Dravid & Ganguly by mid 90s but got second chance when Jaddu & Azhar got kicked for betting scandal in 2000. By then he was past prime and looked in pale form. Kambli to me could have easily been top Indian batsman playing for 10-15 yrs but his off field indulgence plus his apparent weakness to short pitch ball (which most Indian batsmen had including Azhar, Ganguly ) led to his downfall. One great thing about his early career was his temperament to play long innings in Tests and had 2 double hundreds in his debut series (with Eng & Zim). While Sachin in his early career was playing some 100+ innings but very few 150+ or double tons.

Agreed that his technique was found wanting against fast short-pitched bowling, but he is not the only batsman who struggled in that series. He probably deserved at least few more chances at the Test level.

If anything Kambli probably lived in more comfortable surroundings in bhandup compared to the crammed lodgings of Sachin in Dadar.

Sachin stayed in Bandra East. This is true. His new house is at Bandra East too at Pali Hill. He owns this 2 or 3 storey whole building. Pali hill is the costliest locality in Bandra at least, which is where Azeem Premji , SRK and many other bollywood superstars have their bungalows/apartments. Off course there are many middle class families there who own apartments rather than whole building or bungalows.

I also read that Basit Ali, Raza Hasan were the next Sachin Tendulkar's when they made their debut. Does anyone remembers those days. Both of them together could not have sustained their place in team for more than 20 tests together? Vinod, was much better than Basit or Hasan, but certainly lacked a lot of things (behavior,attitude,consistency,determination, fitness and perhaps similar batting quality) to become a Sachin. He too was one of those who people expected to be Sachin but as many batsmen faltered he too couldn't be Sachin.

No. The point is that you cannot undermine accomplishments just because the opposition was weak. He did not pick the opposition.

Pretty good. As a teenager, was said to be better than Sachin. For a long time, jealous Sachin struggled to go past Kambli's test batting average but eventually failed and now will always be ranked below Kambli. :--D PS : He was a great actor also. Watch some of his films. They dont make them like Kambli anymore :((

The thing with those guys and Kambli is that they dont have a 50 plus average. I mean couldnt they have just layed him 3-4 tests more and see where his average ends up? Whenever one looks at bhis averae they will think why didnt this guy play a hundred tests

What? Sachin made debut in 89 whereas Basit made debut after few years. Hasan Raza made debut after Basit. There was so much hype with those two players in Pak media.Vinod too made debut years after Sachin made debut.Sachin had already hogged limelight before all of them debuted.
