How good was Vinod Kambli?

Question for some of the older fans here? How good was Vinod Kambli really? There are always some urban legends that he was a higher rated prospect than Sachin? Also whats the beef between them? His test stats with an average of nearly 55 are amazing. ODIs are decent-ish too. So what happened? Why didnt he play more? Seen a lot of his interviews on youtube recently. Looks like a cool guy

one bad series doesn't prove that he was weak....ganguly,raina exposed by short balls in 8-10 series...1 series is too less to judge

He had the talent, lacked work ethics. Talent alone can only take you so far. What you do with it is important.

Others also played against the same attack. For youngster, it was a great achievement, no matter what the attack was, scored 2 double 100s in first 10 tests.

He would have got a longer run IMHO no matter what how off field activities were but just that unfortunately for him and in a good way for us ganguly and dravid just pushed him out. Another guy who lost out on a little longer run was manjrekar thanks to these 2.

yes like most indian batsman back then had weakness against short ball was dropped. As written by rkt poor work ethics; by the time he started working on his short comings dravid, ganguly had already established themselves in test i think yuvi and sehwag had also arrived in ODI scene. I remember him getting selected in ODI side and you could see he had sorted out some of the short ball related issue however he broken his leg during one of the games and never came back.

actually selectors dropped kambli and recalled a guy called sehwag in the next series.

Kambli was higly talented,but when success came to him,he could not handle it.He was dropped after the 1996 wc.But there were contrasting statement from the selectors & coach.Selectors were saying Wadekar had submitted some report about Kambli,but Wadekar denied it.He was most probably dropped for the England tour to accomdate Ganguly who didnt had any performance to show in the domestic tournament,but Jagmohan Dalmia wanted him in the squad & Kambli was soft target

but still he was never given a lot of chances. other players have been given umpteen chances before being disposed for good

after the initial success, he went into a sreeshant mode. too many interests outside cricket. that resulted in his downfall.
