Finally have a solid test opener and u want him in ODIs! Vijay is a clean striker of cricket ball along with perfect technique. He definitely cuts for me as an ODI opener. Agree his past ODI stint not being great but no harm in trying him now as he is in great form.

jf1gp_1 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Gambhir is worse than Dhawan.Was given a long rope before he was eventually dropped and he still hasnt sorted those issues. Dhawan did well in NZ.I wont mind giving him last opportunity here I would agree; going by memory so could be wrong but some of the best gambhir's innings have come on tracks with uneven bounce (i think even NZ pitch had the same issue) but against a moving ball facing a bowler like anderson gambhir wont last long; I would have liked to see Dinesh Kartrik open if only we had kartrik and not saha(or his replacement)

Not that Gambhir has set world on fire in last 1-2 years whateber cricket he played, but with Dhawan is not getting any runs, Gambhir becomes must. But I'll not be surprised a bit if Dhoni ignores him for next test for the reasons widely known.

Gamibhir replacing Dhawan in not related with Shami getting dropped or retained. Though On that point, I think Shami should be replaced as well, but with Ishant and BK doubtful for next test, I am not sure whether we have replacement for him. But that's not what we are discussing here.

At that rate we should be talking about replacing virat pujara as well. Considering Bhvan, jaddu and dhoni have batter far better than those two.

Dhawan has got even worse technical issues. Both are not great openers but we don't have any one else in present tour. Since Dhawan looks like not able to buy a run no harm in trying the reserve opener as we are already into 4th test.

He has got starts in 3 out of 6 innings.Not able to buy a run is exaggeration.Even Kohli and Pujara are struggling. Dhawan was great in NZ,surely he should get more than 3 Tests.As I said GG got a way longer rope,almost 2 years before he was dropped.Going back to him without him having done anything is crazy. Yes,never said Gambhir didnt deserve the rope he got.He did and only after his technical issues became too much,was he dropped.Those issues are still there,so not sure how he would do well again.At best he'll be a short term option before some young guy takes over. Dhawan did well in NZ and has got starts in 3 innings here.I would rather give some time to him then bring GG back and if doesnt work,then get a young opener in.

FreakazoiD Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Don't think Gambhir will play: 1) Dhoni doesn't like him 2) Virat doesn't like him 3) Dhawan has been the best performer in the slip cordon with 5 catches at 1st slip, more than the rest of the slip catchers combined. With our slip cordon as fragile as it is, Dhawan may play as a specialist slip fielder!
