sensible-indian Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 We lost this series because of our batting. But Dhoni's captaincy was atrocious on many instances. 1. No Ashwin with 7 lefties + new faces for 3 Tests 2. Southampton move with 4 bowlers when we had pretty much played with 4 bowlers the prev 2 Tests (Binny didn't bowl much) plus this time we didnt have Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly or Raina to roll the arms and perform the role of 5th bowler. Mooli and Dhawan are not even that. 3. Pacer workload got affected because of the Southampton move (plus lack of Binny usage in first 2 tests). Bhuvi was bowled to the ground. 4. Bad captaincy letting the game drift on many occasions. 1st test match when Anderson Root were batting, Dhoni opened up the fields and Root ensured Anderson faced only 2 deliveries each over on that dull track. Dhoni didn't even try attacking Root and made it easier for him. Another instance - Post tea session in the 5th Test. Bowled 9 overs of Bhuvi even when he was tiring and getting thrashed. Seriously over worked. Didn't change bowlers even when they were getting thrashed. The same mistake he did in JoBerg when Zak wa s getting thrashed post tea. He just goes by a template in tests. Now our bowlers are no world class. But soul sucking, defensive captaincy is harming them more than ever. There is no justification for this. We need a new captain with a fresh outlook. It doesn't matter if he isn't a tactical genius. As long as he selects the right team, manages pacer workload, has decent A and B plans, is proactive - we will be happy. Even if the new guy flops, we will change him. Things can only improve from here.

Had three batsmen averaged above 50 in this series, just three, no more... we'd have won the series 1-0.
adi B Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 a captain has to take the responsibility and some blame for the repeated failures overseas.happened with kapil, sunny etc but we know dhoni is immune because of a powerful backing in srini else he would have sacked long back especially after that home defeat to england

It also fired up England, and Anderson was even more determined to blow us away after. Last 3 tests he has bowled the best ever in his career, in his admission.
Shunya Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 he will play till WC....and continue to be captain...obviously this team is not yet ready....he will continue to take flak for this time until they are ready and good enough...thats what he should do...so until WC it is then...

Had three batsmen averaged above 50 in this series, just three, no more... we'd have won the series 1-0. I never said Dhoni was the only reason we lost. In fact, I would say, if our batting clicked, we would have done fine inspite of Dhoni's bad captaincy. The point is barely managing with bad captaincy must stop at some point of time and this is the best time for it.
Marut Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 India is a not a good team and does not look like a winning team, but they don't have to loose so badly every time. Dhoni's role in these losses is significant. Even average teams draw matches from time to time, but India is becoming famous only for its innings defeats. The manner of defeats are so gruesome that even a draw looks only a remote possibility under Dhoni. Under a different captain, I am almost sure some of these losses would have been draws or lesser defeats.

I guess such things probably matter.
express bowling Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Cricket is a professional sport. In the professional world .... anybody who does not deliver results repeatedly is removed. There has to be repercussions for failure. Otherwise, results will never come.

Innings defeats = nincompoop performances by batsmen- twice. What has batsmen's performance got to do with Dhoni's captaincy? Dear o dear.

BeautifulGame Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 He needs to quit test cricket long overdue. His captaincy has been redundant and liability for some time tbh Good for both ways too we get a different set up for tests and we can preserve Dhoni for ODIs. It would be great if we could stretch his career till 2019 WC.
sensible-indian Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Sometimes the psychological impact of a leader cannot be expressed in words. Also captains do get stale. I don't think Dhoni enjoys captaining in Tests and getting ripped apart too. Better to leave Test cricket for good. It would help us build a new team (which would be bad at first).
FreakazoiD Posted August 17, 2014 Author Posted August 17, 2014 Yes but to be honest' date=' [b']we also don't know how far did Anderson go. But yeah it did fire them up. I guess such things probably matter. Yes, but even if Jadeja had slapped Anderson, it had become evident to all that there was no evidence, so no way Anderson would be banned without evidence. In fact the ECB had agreed to take action against Anderson if India withdrew its complaint (even Srini wanted to go down this route) but Dhoni was the one who refused, and ended up with egg on his face. This despite his legal staff advising him to the contrary. Terrible misjudgment by him, and maybe the start to a fraying relationship with the board.
express bowling Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Dhoni has failed miserably as a leader and motivator in test matches. He has not been able to lift the spirits of the team when times are tough. With team spirit hitting rock bottom, even the in-form players like Rahane, Vijay and Bhuvi have failed later on in the series.
express bowling Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Remove all the 16 who turned up then. Well barring Bhuvi' date=' Dhoni, Vijay and Ashwin. Remove everyone.[/quote'] Most of the batters have failed in one series. Kohli did well in Australia, SAF and NZ. Rahane, Bhuvi, Ishant , Vijay and Aaron are being considered as pluses for this series. Dhoni has failed as a test captain for 3 years. That is the difference. Long term failures, like Gambhir, need to go for sure. Rohit, Dhawan, Jaddu etc. are on thin ice too.

If the legal team advised Dhoni, its stupid as hell to move ahead and make a fool out of yourself. I guess he let his ego get on top of him.

ECB just said they want India to lay a L2 charge, there was no commitment from ECB that there would be a punishment. The reason to lay an L2 charge was be cause L3 is serious and leads to suspension of a Test match via a judicial hearing.
Marut Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Wht's the corelation between dhoni's captaincy and innings defeats? Jeez! Innings defeats = nincompoop performances by batsmen- twice. What has batsmen's performance got to do with Dhoni's captaincy? Dear o dear. Simple - if good batsmen are repeatedly failing, it means the captaincy is unmotivating and uninspiring and has failed its purpose. The team is not a good one, but even then it is performing well below its capability due to Dhoni's stale captaincy. For Dhoni, losing a test match is just another day in the office, and why will the players in the team raise their game for such a captain?
asterix Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Maybe Ganguly hasn't won as many trophies as Dhoni however as far as team rebuilding is concerned, Dhoni would be the last person I'll trust rebuild a side... I would rather trust a Ganguly. There's a reason why Dhoni's process is taking long and situation is turning bad to worse... Even if you give him another 2 more years, he won't be able to build a team from scratch... He's biased, has a set of players whom he backs to the hilt and others he just disowns them... Has a idiotic set of coaches who remain impotent just not to cross his path... He believes that at this level players should know to learn on their on and find ways to excel... He bowlers to fend for themselves... Controls everything from how to bowl to setting stupid fields and then leaves the bowlers to fend for themselves... If any bowlers does well the he gets ground to dust by Dhoni over using him... Sorry, thanks but no thanks... Please take way your stupid captaincy to limited overs format... Leave the team building to more competent players...
