Police spot ‘dead’ AAP activist in Bangalore, Nepal

Chandra Mohan Sharma, the RTI activist and Aam Aadmi Party member whose burnt body was recovered from his car in Greater Noida three months ago, is now suspected of having staged his death. The Noida Police have sent teams to Karnataka and Nepal and its bordering areas after reports of the 38-year-old being spotted there, SSP Preetinder Singh said. Sharma is also suspected to be living with a woman, his wife said. “We are still in the process of verifying the input of him being alive. We have not made any arrests yet,†the SSP added. But the activist’s wife, Savita Sharma, said the police had unofficially confirmed the tip-off was true. She, too, said she believed Sharma had faked his death. The mystery deepens with the police also looking afresh into the identity of the burnt body in the car. They had sent it for DNA testing right after the incident but are still waiting for the results. Savita Sharma said the police had put a trace on her husband’s mobile phone and found vital leads to his whereabouts. “There was a young woman in our locality who was in touch with my husband. She used to contact him on his private number, which was known to only a few people. After a month of his death she also went missing,†Savita said. “From the call logs, the police traced their movements to Karnataka. I believe he is alive and if he is caught, he should be hanged. Those who helped him should also be punished,†she said. Sharma, who worked for Honda Siel, was suspected to have been trapped in his Chevrolet Aveo after it caught fire on May 1 while he was on his way home. Fire tenders had rushed to the spot but failed to save him. Initially ruled an accidental death, the police had lodged an FIR on a complaint by the family, who suspected Sharma had been murdered by the land mafia. The RTI activist had blown the lid of several corrupt land deals in Gautam Budh Nagar. The autopsy report confirmed death due to asphyxiation, and said there were no external injuries on the body. Sharma’s family had demanded a CBI probe and AAP, too, had called for a detailed and fair investigation.

Only this time it was because he was alive! As reports poured in the facts around the case became clearer. It was a story straight out of a masala thriller — a tale of infidelity, death and deception. Chandra Mohan Sharma who was picked up by the Karnataka police in Bangalore, confessed that he was unhappy with his married life and he faked his death in order to live with an unmarried 26-year-old woman who he fell in love with. The activist convinced his brother-in-law Videsh to help him. A report in Hindustan Times quoted police as saying, "He narrated his family problems to Videsh (brother-in-law) and said if his death was staged, Videsh’s sister would get a job and money from insurance policies that Sharma had,” said Preetinder Singh, senior superintendent of the police. This is where things begin to get gory. Sharma reportedly killed a mentally-challenged man, placed him behind the wheels of a car, left his wallet and personal belongings to make the body look like his, and set the car on fire. Police say his brother helped him bring the mentally unstable man from Ansal Plaza in Delhi to Greater Noida, where they strangled him with a belt before putting him in the car and setting it on fire He was arrested on Friday for faking his own death and charged with murder. Sharma's family had alleged that he was murdered because he was looking for land records of a disputed temple in Kasna village through RTI queries. During investigation of the case, police found that days after Sharma's 'death', a young woman also went missing from Kasna in June. The two were apparently having an affair. After a complaint of the woman’s family, the police registered a case of kidnapping on June 7. In mid-August, her family got a phone call saying that the woman was in Tirupati but when tracked the call traced to a public phone in Bangalore. Through eye-witnesses and CCTV footage, police found that the calls were made by a man in a Honda uniform. Evidence led police to the Honda’s factory in Narasapur, which is about 50km from Bangalore. And it's not really hard to guess what they found. Chandra Mohan Sharma was working at the factory under the name of Nitin Sharma, a resident of Hisar in Haryana. Sharma was working for Honda in Greater Noida at the time of his disappearance and had the requisite experience. After apprehending Sharma, the police found the woman in Kolar. Sharma had gone quite a few extra miles to hide his identity. He had shaved his hair, and forged his marksheets but tattoos on his body had helped police ascertain his true identity. According to the report in HT, Sharma’s family was supposed to get 36 lakh as claim from Honda Siel after his death. The company had already paid 20 lakh and was about to make the rest of the payment when the police got leads that Sharma was alive. After escaping to Bangalore the first time, Chandra Mohan came back to Delhi on June 7 to take the young woman with him. While his plan seemed to work out, he could not make ends meet with his new job. Sharma's wife, first Savita Sharma does not believe the story however. She insisted in a Times of India report that her husband was being framed. In a statement to TOI, Savita said: "The entire episode reeks of blackmail. I believe my husband could not have worked to this plan on his own. Besides the woman my husband was friendly with, there are more people involved. I strongly believe the people I had named in the FIR are responsible and they forced my husband to stage his own death," she said.
