BCCI inaction against undisciplined players has hurt the game

We have only got to read some sections of the Justice Mudgal IPL Probe Committee's report but, using deductive logic, it does appear that there has been no involvement on the part of the players who were investigated by the panel for spot-fixing or betting. However, there is an infraction of the Players' Code of Conduct by a player identified as Individual 3. Some accounts will have us believe that some 'action' was taken against Individual 3 by then team manager Mr Ranjib Biswal on India's tour of Sri Lanka in 2010.The BCCI now claims that the player was reprimanded for violating the Players' Code of Conduct after he spent a night away from his room in the company of a woman alleged to be close to bookmakers. The delay in making this public is reminiscent of what the Australian Cricket Board (now Cricket Australia) did two decades ago. It fined Mark Waugh and Shane Warne for breach of contract after it was found that the two players accepted $5000 each from an Indian bookmaker in Colombo in 1994 but the international community heard about it four years later. It will be interesting to see if Mr Biswal's report to the Board at the end of the tour mentioned this incident and his reprimand of the player. It will also be interesting to see if the reprimand was delivered to the player concerned in writing and that a copy still exists in the BCCI's records. Will then BCCI president Shashank Manohar, who is now campaigning for cleaning up the mess, Mr Srinivasan, Mr Biswal, who is now IPL chairman and Mr Rajiv Shukla, who is said to have been informed about the incident (perhaps because the player is said to be from his home state) ever share why they did not make the "reprimand" public? Did they not lose a chance to ensure that such infractions did not recur? Did they believe that the problem would not be repeated by someone else during the IPL? By letting such incidents subside with 'quick and quiet action', the cricket officials let the game down considerably. They forget that the game is bigger than any player or official. Of the four persons named in the Mudgal report last week, it does appear that the findings against Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals' co-owner Raj Kundra that they were IPL team officials and indulged in betting are quite watertight. Whether it will lead to the franchisees paying the ultimate price remains to be seen. IPL COO Sundar Raman may focus on how he was unaware that the person who he contacted eight times in a season was friendly with a bookie/bookies and that he did not discuss the fact that he was aware of Meiyappan and Kundra's betting activities because he has been advised by the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit that the information was not actionable. We do not even know if Sundar Raman, who was quick to revoke a franchise official's accreditation over some parking issues back in 2010, considered issuing friendly warnings to Meiyappan and Kundra that he had information about their betting activities and they were infringing the IPL Franchisee rules. BCCI president (in abeyance) Srinivasan's defence to the charge that he and four other BCCI officials did not act against a player (identified as Individual 3) for a violation of Players' Code of Conduct is most likely to point out that the then BCCI president (Mr Manohar) was the one empowered to take any action. For all that, there can be no mistaking that credibility levels dipped in the wake of murky events in the 2013 IPL. The BCCI must initiate confidence building measures to ensure that there is no erosion of the massive fan base that the game enjoys in the country at a time when some fresh options - not necessarily based in India - are becoming available on TV and internet.

Its Raina, in 2010 this report did came out about women entering Raina's name. It might be not as per the code of conduct but as a youngster you always would go for such things i.e. girls for a one night stand.

so hows this incident (raina seeing a girl in SL) is relevant to No.3 player in the IPL spot fixing.. I read an article in TOI today, claiming that no.3 player is the one who met a girl in his room in SL which is actually Raina.. stupid indian media.. they have nothing concrete to write about.. so they start speculating.. low class journalism

Secondly, BCCI did take some action apparently namely reprimanding him (whatever that means). The fact that this incident made it in a big way in the Mudgal committee report shows how useful this whole exercise has been.
