Less visibility with uber. for buses you can atleast reach out to the organization. Uber is all app and a unkown driver.
At least in the north India, most taxis are driven by these random people. Most are unmarked and often illegal. I think what we need is a background check for all these jobs and also people like me, who in the past have not bothered if its a legal or illegal taxi need to change ways.

This whole background check process itself can be manipulated by paying a bribe. May be we need a separate private agency to do it.

Character certificate given to #Uber cab driver is fake, the officer, whose signature is there, is posted in Mizoram: #Delhi Police The format of the Character certificate issued to Uber driver itself is fake. Certificate has signature of Addl DCP but has logo of Addl CP #Delhi Police has initiated an inquiry over "Character Certificate", has lodged an FIR regarding it

The private agency can be bribed too! Privatization is NOT a panacea to all problems.

People assume uber like services provide better security. It is not the same with autos and buses. We all know we should be on guard in those. When you give a certain impression to the public you have to live up to it and not hide behind "terms and conditions". It is either that or the public is stupid for not waking up earlier to uber and its ilk's business model.

Can be. Speaking from an experience in my state after they privatized electricity there was no stealing of electricity and no delays in getting a new connection. People working Govt offices in India are just too corrupt and people are too lazy.

It's not privatization - it is competition or choices. The more choices you have the lower the chance of a monopoly and laggard attitude.

Interestingly, they jumped on to ban a system, where its relatively easier to track the misbehaving entities.. How are normal taxi/auto services more secure than Uber, and more trackable in the event of a mishap? Given the pace of things, to me, it looks like a pre-planned agenda for attacking Uber.

This is stupidity at its highest order. By banning UBER, one is just tiptoeing around the failed bureaucracy and the incompetence of police procedures. The accused apparently was acquitted of rape charges in 2011, I bet due to lack of evidence due to the incompetence of police securing evidence from a crime scene which could have led to the conviction of this criminal instead him roaming around free. And then he managed to forge an all clear certificate to get his taxi license. So cops should be going after these forging documents gangs to prevent the repeat of this incident in the future but NO...quick solution...ban UBER and blame it on them to hide our incompetency and keep public happy. No wonder, companies are afraid to invest in India.

There are private companies that provide security guards, bouncers etc. They perform good background checks. Maybe private companies also providing drivers to individuals and cab companies is a solution.

U can centralize with big private agencies to do these checks on cab drivers ( like private banks do for loans.) No one knows who is going to do the checks so the chances of bribery are minimal. Unlike with police where 200 rs gets u character certificate

I feel the ban is temporary till the time they get license .Company doesn't even have a Address on its website .
