Have been puzzled by this for many years but could not find answers for this, Why most of the bowlers from south has Front on action and mainly inswing kind of bowlers? I mean body's natural movement is to be side on when we are throwing some thing with our full strength you ask a small boy to throw stone at some thing he would be side on 99% of times, he will put his left leg ahead and hurled the object with his right hand in a Side on movement exception are ladies, does that mean man from south have softer throwing muscle or resemble more like girls? look at the list below of all the bowlers who come from south almost 70-80% of them are front on I can go on and on but these are some whom I know, with more front on action it is very difficult to generate speed and no wonder why most of the bowlers from south are trundlers you can get more accuracy though, Venkatesh Prasad, Abbey Kuruvilla (originally from Kerala) Abhimanyu Mithun, Thiru Kumaran, Debasis Mohanty Javagal Srinath Tinu Yohanan

So Srinath is a trundler he is one of the fastest. Brett lee bowled front on he generated speed as well. Side on bowlers are more prone to injury as well but they will create an angle though.

I guess it is more the kind of work that people are used to doing in North as opposed to South... For example see the typical work below...The southie is front on and the northie is side on :winky: 3nBZY.png

guys, what I mean to say is why bowlers from south are more front on compared to other parts of the world, I may have taken some example which is not 100% correct but I guess you got my point look at even spin bowlers like Ashwin, Aprajith they are both front on. there are exception in other parts where majority is Side on but few Front on and you can take Brett Lee as such example, I try to look for reasons my self and it appear that over all south people may have their rib cage more wider at the bottom compared to other parts where the rib cage (chest) is more wider at the top and hence give them more developed trapezious muscle and more broad shoulders, which gives them ability to throw ball more side on fashion.

most of the quickest bowlers in the cricket history (Marshall, Walsh, Patterson, Croft, Garner, Benjamins, Bishop later, Griffith) were front on. Even Dilhara Fernando who was crap most of the time hit 150k with front on action. Front on actions allows more power to hit the pitch hard. Front on bowlers infact have stronger muscles because they get less momentum off their runups and delivery stride.

Sri Lankans are of South Indian descent (and some north Indian contribution as well), but we produce a lot of classical bowlers. Vaas, Lakmal, Zoysa, Nuwan Pradeep, Mathews and Kulasekara are all side on bowlers while Eranga, T. Perera and Dilhara Fernando are front on. Most of the spinners are side on. Herath, Perera, Randiv, Dilshan and J Mendisall are side on. Only A. Mendis and S. Prasanna are front on because they have unorthaodox approachs. The reason may be the bigger men like Ashwin, Fernando or T. Perera has enough raw strength to hurl it quickly enough. They might have adopted the style for getting more control.

I knew that that my post will invite criticism, but rather then criticizing me please try to understand point I am trying to make why so many south Indian are Front on Bowlers and I have tried to look for explanation my self since no one has provided any, by the way Srilankan are not south culture they originally descended from Orissa. Those ICFers who are south Indian please don't feel offended I am not trying make you look inferior it is how we have evolve instead should look at them selves and see if point I am trying to make is good or not and if they agree please give good explanation why most are front on, I am from Central India and most in my state are Veggies, their structure is short and small our face is round compared to long face of people from other part of the world we have more moller teeth and our K9 is smaller and I believe that is do do with what we eat more grains, dals and veggie compared to meat, genetically most of us Indian are different with different physical traits, that is why I said that South's are more front on may be because their rib cage is broader at bottom and not so strong shoulder muscle, some of these bowlers have been able to bowl fast like Srinath but its no brainer that people with Side on action will generate more speed on the average that is why you have some of the fastest like F Trauman, D Lillie, Jeff Thompson, Shaun Tait, Shoib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Malinga with complete side on action, you look at example of Jevelin or discuss thrower they all use side on technic.

Patrick Patterson, Charlie Griffith, Colin Croft, Makhaya Ntini, Andrew Flintoff and Malcolm Marshall say hi this. What I have found is front on actions generate more bounce while side on actions generate more variable bounce

its actually the opposite. front-on action is what helps to produce genuine speed where as side on (classical) action helps to bowl out-swingers.
No that's wrong. Cannot generalize. It is different for different bowlers. In general, side-on action will generate higher pace, but will be prone to lack of accuracy. Front and mixed action provide more accuracy. Also, side-on action leads to back injuries that is why bowlers started to bowl mixed or front on. The reason we see very few side-on action bowlers these days.

In that sense we cannot say a particular type bowler will be more faster than other type coz there are numerous other factors which decides the speed. But if we remove all other factors and just consider type of action. In my opinion, round-arm slinging action is the best option for generating raw pace. Bowlers like malinga, waqar, thompson, .. Round arm bowlers are more side-on than front-on. May be thats why you said side-on can generate more pace. In my opinion pure side-on action (not round-arm) (example kapil dev, heath streak, southee, ...) which helps to point the seam towards first-slip effecting out-swing are the slowest of all types. Front-on action (example srinath, bret lee, ...) which helps to point the seam towards leg-slip effecting in-swing are more quicker than the above category. north indians are considered to be stronger than south indians. that can be one of teh reasons why north indian bowlers are more quicker even though srinath is a execption.

Side-on round arm action generate more pace, but it depends on individuals too. Brett Lee was not front on. He had mixed action.
