Is Aaron more suited for ODI cricket?

If you bowl at such pace, it is very difficult to get all 6 balls in the right areas. And the attacking approach of the Australian batsmen has complicated matters more as it has exposed his inexperience. Many of his runs seem to come in the 3rd man and square regions which can be protected in ODI cricket. Also, the score board pressure in ODI cricket will force batsmen to take more risks early on and may present us with more chances. He does not seem bad in bowling yorkers… This does not mean that he should not correct his perennial accuracy problems as he needs to land at least 4 balls in the right place even in ODI cricket. But considering his bowling style and the stage of his career, I believe he could be a better ODI bowler. I’m getting a feeling his performances in test cricket may put him out of reckoning of ODI cricket which could be a mistake.

He will go for a lot of runs in ODI. If he can't prevent leak of runs in a test match, how will he do this in ODIs? If he were a containing bowler who can't take regular wickets, he would be a good fit for ODIs. But Aaron at this point neither contains nor gets wickets, no way we should try him for ODIs.

He has a FC average of 38 but a List A average of 25. Selecting him for tests was a gamble, but that doesn't mean that his poor performances in tests should cost him his ODI place. Should never mix up the formats.

Also the absence of 3rd man, point and leg side protection (unlike ODIs) has aggravated this problem. Unless he builds up a reputation that Johnson has managed to do, he can’t take wickets by simply intimidating the batsmen by bowling quick as the batsmen will keep attacking and scoring runs with a test match field setting. Only option for him in that case is to keep bowling consistently on one side of the wicket which seems unnatural to him at the moment. ODI field setting will allow him to keep attacking while not conceding excessive runs. And if we grab the chances that he offers along the way, there’s no reason why he can’t do well. Definitely he needs to stop bowling short/wide balls but a lot of runs that were leaked were due to other reasons. Also, if he can manage (or learn) to bowl yorkers at such pace and if the batsmen look to attack its only going to increase their chances of getting out. And it think its fallacious to say that one can be an effective ODI bowler only if he succeeds in test cricket. They are completely different formats. Quite a few bowlers have been good performers in odis but have been unable to replicate that in tests and vice versa.

I don't think anyone said that. In ODIs, a containing bowler is often more important compared to a wicket taking bowler. Aaron cannot contain runs in test match and he is unlikely to do so in ODIs. In the few ODIs Varun has bowled in, he was completely taken apart. In the nine ODIs he has played so far, he has conceded over 6rpo in seven games. These are signs of a very expensive bowler, and he did not back up his expense with wickets either. A team like Bangladesh smashed him for 10 runs per over, he can't be admitted into our ODI side without learning some control.

I am going to give him a benefit of doubt. If Ishant can get so many chances, we got to work on him. Look he hasn't been great but at least he does have some good strength and with few more test can gain lot of experience, albeit even if it's not on this tour. Aaron can still learn from this. He hasn't really played that many test, and sometimes it takes a series, tour to be over to realize how badly you bowled or what different you should have done. I will keep Aaron in the squad, even though he can't be picked for the next game. I still think that he surely is one of the best in India, and if he keep him and make him play more, he will just get better. I know it hurts to see him not able to control, but it happens. Even Mitchhell Johnson has struggled in the past in his home conditions when they couldn't buy a wicket during 2009 ashes and Johnson was soon dropped from Australian team. Aaron is still young and should be trusted and kept faith in.
