In listing the fastest balls bowled in the Test match, three of the first four mentions had a certain Umesh Yadav clocking 150 kph. Raw and fast, Umesh was a breath of fresh air in Indian cricket. He could also get the ball to swing away from the batsman at good pace making him a possible successor to Zaheer Khan as the leader of the Indian pace attack. Interestingly it was not only away from home that Umesh did well. He bowled well against West Indies in 2011 at home before doing well in Australia in the 2011 series. However, back injury forced him out of the game. Out of action for a good six months or so, Umesh came back to international cricket earlier this year and once again did reasonably well in the one day internationals he played in Bangladesh and England. Test cricket, however, is a different story. In what could have been the series that reinforced his status as India's premier fast bowler, Umesh has looked listless and all over the place. He is bowling fast but without direction and is not pitching the ball in the right areas all through the series. Sydney is the best case in point. Bowling to Steve Smith when the Aussie captain was one stroke away from his hundred, Umesh bowled him a full toss on leg stump. Smith duly obliged by dispatching the ball to the boundary and scoring his 4th ton of the series. This is not the only time Umesh wavered in line and length. In the second innings he started of a spell with a rank bad ball on leg stump to Smith who yet again flicked it to the boundary past Saha. Thereafter he conceded a flurry of boundaries to Smith, Haddin and Burns going for a mammoth 45 runs of the 3 overs he has bowled. Frankly, Umesh has been a serious let down for India in this series down under. Unable to control his line and length, he has seemed pedestrian and out of sorts. With all to play for to build his own reputation, he has conceded close to six an over in most spells and has consistently made it easy for the Australians giving away easy runs. The question is why? Why is it that Umesh is going the Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan route? Why is it that Indian fast bowlers who come with a lot of promise fritter away within a very short span of time? Why is it that after four years in international cricket which should have seen him mature into a top fast bowler, Umesh continues to struggle each time the captain throws the ball to him? A comparison with Josh Hazlewood and the point becomes clear. With far less experience, Hazlewood has done one thing consistently right through the series - pitch the ball in one particular area. His economy rate is proof of the effort put in by the youngster. If he can, why can't Umesh? With all the talent and with the ability to bowl real quick, why is it that Umesh Yadav is on the path of self destruction? That's what brings me to the support staff- Fletcher, Bharath Arun and the others. We are tired of hearing the young team argument. Umesh is no rookie anymore with five years of experience behind him. If he can't graduate from good to better in five years, perhaps it is time to question his basics. In the very same time Virat Kohli has progressed from good to better to the very best. How difficult is it for the coaches to tell Umesh that he needs to land balls in one area? Why cant he do the basics right and bowl to a field and not turn himself into a captain's nightmare and bowl all over the place? With the World cCup just round the corner India has reposed a lot of faith in Umesh. And he does have the talent if experts like Saurav Ganguly are to be believed. But something is indeed going wrong for him time and again. Umesh isn't the bowler he was in 2011. In fact, he is far worse. Can he stem the tide and pick himself up? Can he stand up to the test and lead the campaign in the title defence a month from now? It is cricket's biggest stage and perhaps the best opportunity for Umesh Yadav. Question is if he is looking at the world cup as an opportunity? If the Test series is any indication he isn't and that's what Indian fans are worried about.

Bowl 5km slower but with a consistent line. What's the point of charging in like a mad bull and hurling the ball with no control? Time after time these imbeciles have stuck to the pattern of bowling rubbish and depending on the opposition to declare. I wonder what the bowling coach and main coach are teaching these guys.

Johnson achieved it in last 1 year and he became deadly but even he's finding it tough to maintain that now. We have guys who can hit good line+lengths and bowl brisk pace. Ishwar Pandey, Pankaj Singh, Mohit Sharma but they hardly get selected or a consistent run in any format.

Pandey is a good prospect, and I'd like to see him get a chance.

He lacks control not because he bowls quick. Yesterday, he wasn't bowling quick at all. Umesh has technical flaws which lead to wayward bowling whether he bowls 135 or 145.
