He must have had extremely strong wrists, his grip was that strange I've never even tried it lol, apart from facing a tennis ball maybe.

It actually was very well controlled to be fair.

Both of them had a role to play. http://www.espncricinfo.com/wc2007/engine/match/247507.html :giggle: Seriously though, the planets well and truly aligned for Australia during that period, to have a genuine wkt keeper destroy attacks the way he did with Hayden-Ponting-McGrath-Warne dancing to the same tune will probably never happen again, was probably the best international 11 to ever walk the planet, the entire top- middle order averaged 50 or above, aided by 2 of the best bowlers the world has seen.

At first nobody said anything but once Aus lost 3 wickets Ponting asked Gilchrist did you really not see the umpire ??

Lol, doesn't surprise me, but it did help Gilly in the long run, umpires knew he was a walker after that and were hesitant to give him out if he didn't walk, he could've picked a better time though lol, if we'd lost that match he would've been crucified.

I don't think people called him better than Punter, etc. And we know that Punter, haydos, etc all finished with avgs in the low 50s. That's what Gilly would have had if he played as a batsman. To avg near-60 is bloody hard.

There are lot of if and buts but he was easily as good a batsman as anybody in australian team barring Ponting. And he was a proper wk as well.

He even touched 60 at one point, after about 60-70 Tests. But, the point is that Punter avg 59 after 100 Tests, and so did Dravid (2006) and Tendu (around 2002) after 100 Tests as well. My point is that sustaining a near-60 avg over a long career is near impossible. Apart from the ancient Sutcliffe, no batsman with more than 30 tests has an avg of 60+ (and obviously Bradman of course). I'm all for the Gilly love, but it's sad to see everyone trash talking Sanga's achievements this way.
Texan Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 If question is about wicket-keeper batsman, then Sanga was a terrible keeper. Gilly wins the keeper-batsman battle. If batting skills alone are compared, then Sanga comes out on top.
