Indian author gives up writing after Hindu nationalist protests

This is exactly why the BJP needs to start aggressively investing in pan national media in all languages. Considering our media is left leaning IMO they need to look at legal ways to neutralise papers like The Hindu etc. TOI especially needs to be reigned in. One of the best ways to choke left wing media is to ensure that adverts in these papers are stiffled. This means ensuring that you dont buy products which are advertised on these papers. OR you convince the patrons of the companies who advertise in these papers to pull out. IMO the RSS and BJP need to be doing everything legally possible to ensure that left wing outlets ensure severe financial losses. A way forward might be to heavily increase VAT on all newspapers. Considering most of them are left leaning it will send a strong message.

Anyone can threaten him. Has there been one instance of attack aimed at causing physical injury at him so far? The state completely failed to protect a person who is claiming to be threatened by some pro hindutva guys but did they? You are talking like pre crime police in Minority Report and blaming people even before a crime has been conducted. The funniest thing is linking the acts of a few miscreants and generalizing them into "hindutva terror" and then somehow linking them to Modi sarkar. Totally forgetting the ground reality.
Physical assault alone is not a crime. Threats to cause injury or death is a criminal offense. Though I agree that equating caste based groups with hindutva is a ridiculous notion.

Should political party really should be allowed to invest in media ?:hmmm:
They definitely should not be allowed to own media but in India many parties, especially in South India, own big media outlets. I do agree with GB in that many news outlets in the country are too left leaning thus coverage will usually be one sided so they should be reined in. But now there is another problem - almost all the big Hindi channels have become pro BJP bcoz of $$$ and being in the good books of the party in power - that also needs to be checked but it won't happen.

Overall the author is getting support from neutral people. It is a caste thing more than a relgious thing. Some Brahamins in TN support. Some don't. Some say for years Brahmins are shown in poor light in movies yet they don't protest out fear for whatever reason but other castes strong protest even at the slightest insult. So his novel is about specific practice of a caste. Funny thing is this novel came 2 years back lol. Not now.
The book was released in 2001. These protesters have suddenly found something offense after 14 years

Writers move HC in support of Perumal Murugan The Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ Association has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Madras High Court, seeking to declare as null and void the peace meeting held at Namakkal Collectorate, after which writer Perumal Murugan renounced writing. Mr. Murugan was “helpless†and was forced to tender an unconditional apology and delete certain portions from his novel Madhorubhagan, at the peace meeting organised by the Namakkal administration on January 12, the association has submitted before the court. In the PIL, association president, S.Tamilselvan said the district administration conducted the peace meeting after a demonstration and a local bandh in Tiruchengode, where the writer was left alone. The association alleged that he was intimidated into subscribing to the demands of the opponents, backed by the revenue and police officials. Left with no other option, he tendered an unconditional apology. It said the author’s decision at the meeting to issue an unconditional apology, delete the controversial portions from his book, withdraw unsold copies from the market and not to write about any controversial subjects hurting the people’s sentiments should be declared as null and void. Hence the present petition. The novel that has been at the centre of controversy revolves round the futile efforts of a childless couple and a myth related to a temple car festival. The novel is set in pre-Independence period involving consensual sex ritually associated with the annual car festival of Sri Arthanareeswarar temple at Tiruchengode in Namakkal district. The author hailed from a village in Tiruchengode. The petition is likely to come up for hearing on Tuesday. CPI’s appeal PTI reports from Delhi: The Communist Party of India on Monday appealed to Mr. Murugan to reconsider his decision to leave the literary world, while it denounced the fundamentalist forces for “strangulating†the writer’s freedom. The CPI also disapproved the stand of government officials which, the party claimed, “forced†the writer to withdraw his novel. The party’s national council meeting held in Nagpur passed a resoluton, urging Mr. Murugan to continue writing. Noting that Mr. Murugan has been writing on social issues for the last 25 years and he recently condemned the compulsory capitation fee prevalent in private educational institutions in Namakkal district, the party said that the particular article irritated the commercial educational capitalists. “In this background, the RSS found fault with a recorded cultural event in his novel and campaigned against him and organised a public protest,†it said. http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/writers-move-hc-in-support-of-perumal-murugan/article6802612.ece

The issue should not be whether the book is offensive or not.But it is about the response for being offended. How exactly is issuing death threats to the author and forcing him to stop writing by threat justifiable. What these Hindutva outfits are doin is using the mob mentality to harass everyone they dont agree with to gain political mileage. They are in the process trying to make any criticism of religion taboo just like Islam and insecure and intolerant.

There is no VHP/RSS angle to this protest, it has been proven many times..so don't keep harping. In India religion (esp Hindu) can be insulted, but caste is a big no-no. You can insult Brahmins as much, nobody will go on the streets to protest. For other castes, there are organizations (caste police) that will litter the streets as it is directly linked to votes for political parties. So, a lot of mileage can be gained by vested individuals to raise up to the occasion to gain some popularity.

So who exactly is Hindu Munnani? Both Hindu munnai and RSS are involved in the protests along with KMP the caste party with negligible presence If that was the case there would have been protests 10 years back when the book was released by people belonging to the caste.

Hindu Munnan ..never heard of them before.RSS has denied any involvement.. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/we-dont-have-time-for-such-protests-rss/article6782741.ece Something triggered when the english translation was available... the first person account of the lawyer involved in negotiations mentions that the persons who signed in the peace minutes had no organizational backing. http://m.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/perumal-murugan-was-asked-to-exile-himself-by-police/article6792161.ece/

your point is ? i am not congress supporter and if its so blatant then they should be stopped from doing this rather than other parties following it .
That would be the logical thing to do but if BJP supporters, many here on ICF as well, have their way then BJP should buy/start its own media companies to "right this wrong" done by Congress

If someone is receiving threats for his writing, then he can take measures against it or write about something else. But many people would just stop writing at all if their work is not being appreciated, and in this case it is being burnt. I don't think we can blame the author for his decision.

Well said. Exactly what I said in the Sensor Board thread - its very surprising that such intelligent people have no problem with all this as long as the Govt is taking "revenge" from Congress by doing exactly what the Congress did, only with BJP/RSS men in place of Cong people.

how do you know nothing will change? Say what you may about the RSS but the bulk of their top leadership have no progeny and are workaholics. Yes they have a cultural agenda. But from a corruption POV they are extremely clean. So it depends what you define change as. Take somebody like Khattar. Unmarried. No craving for money. Works 70 hours a week. Clearly thats going to benefit the state of Haryana. The probability of Khattar being involved in a scam is extremely low. Thats not to say BJP dont have corrupt members. Ofcourse they do. But their % is much lower. Its not fair to compare the congress to the BJP/RSS. Both have totally different ethos. Now you can say the ethos of the RSS will be imposed as compared to the Congress ethos. But they are different things.

how does this stuff even matter in topics like influence on media and censor board ? i am saying solve what congress did wrong instead of doing wrong thing yourself.. instead of talking about influencing media make it independent .it does not matter what ideology is it should be free from it and that is my point .
