Tell you friend not to pay heed to match results. Need to be focused, he's got his own innings to play later that day.

I agree rationally and logically big fat weddings are waste. But society don't run on rational and logic.Parents in India have lot of emotions attached with it. It is for their emotions and social respect that so much money had to be spent
Yeah...spend their life's earning to show off and then expect the son to pay for the 'sacrifices' by being dependent on him.

He is 21, do you expect him to have crores of Rs that they are spending on their wedding and honeymoon? And its not like he works somewhere where job security matters. Got his dad's business. Even those guys who marry at age of 28-30 don't finance their own wedding. Parents always have money saved up for wedding.
He should not be marrying at 21....Should marry once you have the spine to say...don't waste money like this. It is usually a combination of parents who want to make a point to the world and children who don't care if their parents earning is getting wasted. Some children are also as bad as their parents and want the best.Of course if you have lots of money to waste .....then who cares....except maybe the income Tax department.:giggle:

Why on earth should someone spend crores for their marriages. Is show off so important?
To a lot....some are forced (as in ladkiwalle to have a 'good' wedding...some others see it as their time to show how well they did in life)Pretty pathetic.Weddings should be about two people coming together....
But when do the young generation take a stand. A large part of this goes towards considering female a burden and marriage a headache for the women's parents.
To take a stand....the younger generation has to be allowed to grow a spine first...something that is not looked upon well by the parents. Most parents like the spine of their children bending in respect. Some children are also uncaring and expect this from their parents.
No its not show off. Its about treating your business associates in a way which will strengthen your relationship. One of my other friends is a distributor of consumer electronics. He has a huge presence, so he had several top bosses flying from Japan, Korea, China, etc to attend his wedding. You need to work extra to cater to them. You can't have a marriage in small hall and have an elite guest list. For some it may seem to be a showoff but in reality marriages are glorified PR events for rich business families. As in my current friends case, he is not big and guest list is not elite. But I can easily see him spending 1cr+ in his wedding.
So true...shaadi is a PR event for some.In that case it is like an investment.

I think this guy is an exception..Most Indians, especially in the south do get married in their late 20s and mostly they would have saved enough by then to be not dependent on their parents. A small percentage of households are even sharing the wedding costs. Things are changing. But one needs to realize that in India the pressure to get married is so much that you have only 5 years before your wedding and saving about 5 Lakhs is difficult for most Indians, that they end up taking help from their parents ps: What I hate is the unrealistic expectations from the grooms family on the marriage arrangements and the unnecessary deference that needs to shown towards his family.

That is even worse (spending so much on one big party) when the same money can be used to help the couple. All just show off
Or save for their retirement.

My sister is getting married on February 22nd. Lot of work. Really painstaking work this. Fortunately groom's side are very nice and they understand when few things do go wrong. My younger brother who lives in New Zealand is going for India - Pakistan cricket match and he got a spare ticket for me. But, I'm not going. Gotta look after everything. But, I'm glad god gave me the opportunity to show my love for my sister. She knows how much I love cricket and she knows what I'm doing for her.
