New Delhi, whose new chief minister's constant bronchial difficulties are all too visible, is now said to have the world's worst air quality. An recent article in the Economist under the headline "Breathe Uneasy" reported that levels of PM2.5 (minute particulate matter) in Delhi are routinely 15 times above levels considered safe by the World Health Organisation. New data suggest that, on this score, Delhi's air has been 45% more polluted than that of the Chinese capital for the past couple of years. Any reason for this ? I read somewhere farmers in punjab burn leftovers after the crop is cut. Is this the main reason ? Its a bit like New york (Mumbai) and LA (Delhi) People also forget that Mumbai has Borivali national park to soak up a lot of pollution.
G_B_ Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 and personally speaking Delhi is on the right track. Metro lines are being build and once Delhi has a 400-500 km metro network and the culture of taking public transport spreads things will be much better. With Beijing whats happening is a lot of factories which previously operated are moving inland to cheaper destinations. The metro in Beijing has also become fully operational.

Clarke Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Not sure about Delhi, but overall sarkari apathy is creating a catastrophic environment in the cities. Proper pollution norms came towards the end of the last century and even though there's Euro whatever for personal vehicles, the autos/tempos/trucks/buses particularly the old ones wreak havoc on the air quality. Industrial pollution varies based on location but vehicular pollution is simply everywhere. Junta as such is completely unaware of the long term health issues from this silent killer. Basic pollution masks are seen as uncomfortable, inconvenient and even suffocating. I guess the AIB roast hurts them more than lung cancer.
Clarke Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 FYI, Mumbai air sucks balls as well. The national park can do squat when so many vehicles are packed in such a tiny area. LA & Beijing have geographic issues since the mountains do not allow the wind to dissipate the pollutants. Our metros don't have such issues, just that they're run by incompetence.
