Trundler27 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 feel very sad watching sportsmen like morkel, steyn, abdv, etc crying their hearts out..... the passion was there for all to see but unfortunately for the saffers, they are just not good at handling these high pressure situations as a group. On the bright side, they still have some ways to go before they reach the level of the kiwi's who qualified for the finals after 6 unsuccessful semi-final appearances. SAF is just up to 4 semis defeat so far. The maturity of both teams after the match was a delight to watch as well.... the kiwi's genuinely felt bad for the saffers and celebrated in a very classy manner... lovely sporting spirit!

NZ won. Some people just don't see the difference. SA gave their all...but NZ just managed to hang in there. offcourse they got a big help from RAIN Gods....but in no where AB mentioned that. That shows a great character of his & his team....& how they competed today. Best of luck AB in 2016 for T20 WC.

Marut Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 SA won 2/5 tough matches this WC. Won against WI and SL, but lost to India, Pak and NZ. Imagine a bilateral - does this happen to SA normally? I think they do choke collectively in big tournaments. Amla and AB, #1 and #2 ranked players in both formats, Steyn #1 and #2 bowler in tests and ODIs. #1 spinner Tahir in their ranks. Still they managed to win 2/5 tough matches. If this is not choking, what else is?

If you see India's fielding, etc, they are the best in knockouts and finals of such tournament. They can give any team a run for the money 2) victory and defeat in such huge tournaments is often defined by such missed chances. One great example is Gibbs dropping Waugh. And yes, that was a choke. 3) When one of the best fielding teams in the world makes school boy mistakes like not calling for catches, not holding ball in hand for run-out, then yes it is a choke
profster Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 The fact that we are having a discussion of whether this was a choke or not makes it likely to be a choke. It will take time for people to understand that SA found a new way of choking that is far more sublime than the indisputable batting chokes and the singular D/L calculation choke they are famous for. Fielding choke is defined as the squandering of a series of game winning chances due to a collective inability to cope with the pressure of the match situation and the weight of tournament expectations. So, it is not the odd drop or miss that makes it a choke. I am not a SA hater and actually like them a lot but a tournament team they are not.

It was five. Guptill in the second over. Anderson by AB Elliot, missed collection by De Kock. Two chances missed by De Kock when scampering byes in the last overs. (Watch the replays, a hit would have been out both times) Behardien and Duminy dropping Elliot. They played well otherwise, and it was a great match, but that doesn't mean no choke. Jana Novotna didn't lose 6-0 6-0 to Graf; she dominated and then lost an easy position. Same here; runouts with batsmen miles out, Behardien poised under the ball to finish the match and Duminy runs in like Superman to stop him; De Kock has two chances at a simple bowling ball run out and misses. And then Steyn can't defend 10 off 4 with Vettori on strike. If that's not a choke I don't know what is.
South_Paw Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Definition of Choke (just according to me): A team who are almost certain of a win throughout the first 70% of an innings (second innings to be precise), suddenly loosing is called a Choke. Which implies if the other team was dominating the team that got defeated all through the innings, the mistakes done at the end of the team that lost cannot be called as elements of choke. Also if both the teams are playing equally well, again the team that lost cannot be called as chokers as a match can always have one winner. Example of classic SA choke: IND vs SA 2002 Champion's Trophy SF at Colombo. Chasing 261, at 192/1 and the Req. RR lesser than 6, with the best finisher of that time (Klusener) to come, SA spectacularly managed to loose. Example of not a choke: The 434 Chase. You can never say Aus choked. Its just that SA managed to hold on to the rope for a second longer than Aus. Based on this we can try assessing yesterday's game and decide if SA's lose is a choke or not.
