All time best ODI team

Sorry but no. Dhoni is a way better keeper against spin than Gilly. Gilly is no way the first player picked, Sachin, Viv and Wasim are all way, way ahead of Gilly in their value to an ODI XI.
Disagree, Gilly kept to Warne FFS, Gilly was a keeper who learnt how to bat, not like the other 2.

Don't believe there is one-shoe-fits-all team. So I would have a different team composition for different conditions. Example: Green tracks: Sachin Gilchrist Richards Ponting AB devilliers Klusener Imran Akram Warne Holding Donald Bouncy tracks: Greenidge Hayden Richards Hussey AB devilliers Dhoni Kapil Warne McGrath Ambrose Garner Spin Tracks: Sachin Sehwag Zaheer Abbas Richards Lara Dhoni Imran Saqlain Murali McGrath Garner Flat tracks: Sachin Hayden Zaheer Abbas Richards AB devilliers Dhoni Kapil Saqlain Murali Waqar Donald
Sachin, Gilly will be good on bouncy tracks as well. On spinning tracks, probably, a Kallis (very good player of spin, plus provides a bowling option as well) in place of Zaheer Abbas; Waqar in place of Garner (since there is not much between him an McGrath); with Murali already in the side, I will replace Saqlain with some other bowler. On flat tracks, would again replace Saqlain (instead of two off-spinners would like to have variety) with a Warne or Kumble.

I am surprised no one really mentions Symonds much in All time XI. He is probably the model ODI player.Great batsman destructive one of the best fielder and decent bowler as well
Yes, he is a super talent and adds to the batting depth immensely. Has won quite a few games single-handedly for his team. He is surely in the hunt for No. 6/7 spot.

Jaysuriya Gilchrist Tendulkar Kallis AB DHONI Murali Warne Lee Wasim Mcgrath
I would have Tendulkar open the innings with Gilly. Lara at 3, in place of Kallis, followed by Viv, AB, would have an all-rounder at 7, instead of Warne.

I was also thinking that perhaps Pollock should be up there, he should at least be considered. Excellent player as far as impact players are concerned, Freddie Flintoff was terrific but probably too inconsistent to be there.

Hayden Sachin Viv Richard Ponting AB Devillers Dhoni Wasim Akram McGrath Lee Warne Ambrose You don't need a batsman at 7 when your top 6 is so strong so I would go with 5 front line bowlers

It all pretty much comes down to team dynamic, gilly might be less consistent but scores quicker, when all your other batsmen average mid 40s and up maybe you can afford to take a less consistent but quicker scoring gilly, otherwise you're pretty much just looking at tendulkar, amla and dilshan as your opener options, unless you makeshift an opener. His keeping also allows you to consider more options down the order, dhoni or sangakkara won't have to be picked so you could take another all rounder, then again you could just make de villiers keep.
That's nonsense. Dhoni is THE starter for a ATG XI side. Then comes the rest. May be in feww years ABDV might replace him. But still Dhoni is the best ODI batsman the world has ever seen.

I don't see why Sehwag can't make it if Gilly can. Fear factor right?
No. Shewag can only bat. His next disciplines are mediocre. Gillys next discipline is world class.

Jayasurya was nowhere in the same bracket as a batsman as Sehwag- he was a slightly better bowler and whole lot better fielder.
Massive Lol at this. Even their averages are quite similar, Jayasuriya was a player who could play vital knocks and high pressure knocks than Shewag. As usual Mugal lol puts out Lol statements. Jayasuriya was a class above Shewag as a bowler, because he was fit, bowl his 10 overs, and bowled match after match, rather than a unfit player like Shewag. Lol, 300+ wickets vs how much?
As for TMD being the best fielder of the openers, i disagree. Mark Waugh is easily the best catcher amongst openers.
Highly debatable. OK, I will give this to you. But during Mark Waugh's time it was Jonty and Mahanama who were a class above him in the field.
As for Gilly offering more than Sehwag- that argument only holds if Dhoni is not in the side. If Dhoni is in the side, the case for Sehwag is actually stronger than Gilly.
I agree that Dhoni is the first player on the team sheet over Sachin and Viv. In such instances, Jayasuriya can be picked EASILY over Shewag.
Lastly, Pakistan was NOT the best ODI side Viv faced for most of his career- it was Australia. Australia was a better outfit than Pakistan in ODIs from 74-86/87, after which Pakistan is a better side.
Lol, man you are funny. Australia were mediocre from 1979-1985 period where they lost their best players to Packer series. Pakistan had the best bowling attack if not the best ODI side.

Plenty of people pick Gilly as the keeper and bevan as the finisher.

Disagree' date=' Gilly kept to Warne FFS, Gilly was a keeper who learnt how to bat, not like the other 2.[/quote'] Yes, but he didn't keep to Kumble and any wicketkeeper will rate the Kumble type bowler the hardest to keep to. Dhoni kept to Kumble magnificently and that is pretty much the end-all, be-all of keeping to spinners.

Nice food for thought. That is a very valid point.

Smith is a great player, but for an all time best team, he has played too few a games. If he continues to play the way he is right now, say for next 6-8 years, he will surely be a strong contender.

Miandad is fail honestly. Hopelessly slow batter.
I like his mentality as a player. Street-smart cricketer. Cnut of a person though.
No Murali?
Nah. He was a bit of a minnow basher. Not nearly effective away from sub-cont.
