For example' date=' in US basketball, Michael Jordan was already very good when he joined the NBA- he was already "one of the best" - however, as his career progressed, he changed his signature move "the fade away jump shot" which helped extend his career and [b']ultimately catapulted him from "one of the greatest basketball players" to "the best basketball player of all time" Who are the Cricket examples of star atheletes who were already at the top of their game, yet transformed their techniques to become even better or the all time best? Thanks in advance 6 rings did that. Not a fade away.
f.b.m Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Douglas Marillier would be a good shout for limited overs game. His ramp shot added a whole new dimension to batting which changed the game quite a bit. You're unlikely to find many candidates in test cricket which is quite strategically stale. After Sarfraz Nawaz and reverse swing, nothing much has changed (not including cheating/doosras).

My three candidates would be Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh and Imran Khan who all had pretty big transformations in their careers and went on to become the best (or close to it atleast). MS Dhoni in ODIs would be another one, he changed from being an out and out hitter ( a very good one) to more of an accumulator in 2006/07 and became one of the top ODI batsmen.

He can go block block on the fifth day of a test as well as score the fastest hundred in history in ODIs. There's really few individuals who so much range, most just hide under the facade of 'natural game' while this guy is something else.

That's something that I have never seen others do (including ATGs). That guy is simply superman.
HouMac Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 MJ was already considered the best ever by his first retirement (1993), when the fadeaway was merely one of the moves in his arsenal, not the primary move. It didn't become that until his return in 1995, to compensate for older age and diminished athleticism. And the fadeaway version of MJ(95-98) was not his best version. He was still the best, but his peak was clearly the early 90's, when he had a better combination of skill and athleticism. If we are looking for an MJ in cricket, someone who was already the best and still managed to be the best after significantly changing his playing style to compensate for age, then 08-10 Tendulkar is probably the best example.

MJ might not even have made the greatest transformation in BB. There are probably multiple players who have made greater transformations than he did, it's just that they never reached the heights he did. So if the question is -- who is the greatest basketballer ever? The answer is MJ. Similarly, who is the greatest cricketer ever? Indians will probably say Tendulkar. Most non Indians will say Bradman. If the question is -- who made the greatest transformation in basketball? I don't know. Dennis Rodman? Scottie Pippen? Jeremy Lin? I really don't know. Greatest transformation would be someone like a Vince Carter. From a high flying dunker to someone who can shoot from beyond the line, play decent defense, handle the ball

AB to follow soon - has already and will go on to push the boundaries further than ever before, he is a genius (i think he is going to become a useful bowler too). AB was in and out of the national side for about two years before he had a total mind shift to become one of the best....and he is getting better which must be a scary thought for the opposition.

If any, nowdays boundaries are pushed nearer not further. That's why ABDV has to prove himself much more.
