Brainfade Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Crime show episodes portray a number of ethnicities having their own gangs/mafia - Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Albanian, other Central European, Colombian, Mexican etc. But, you never see Jewish or South Asian mafias. No organized crime for these groups? What gives?
gattaca Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 The goes back to how people migrated to US. In early period of migration not many checks were there and also less restrictions on who migrates to US. I don't know much about Jewish people. But speaking for Indians we migrated only after 1930s remembering from my Ellis Island visit from port of entry records. Chinese I remember came around 1850 or so. So the people who have crime cant migrate to US. Since we migrated late I think we have more restrictions and Gang people cant migrate here also Indians who migrate to US are mostly high skilled labor.

South Asians too mostly moved to the states with degrees.

Early gangs can almost be decribed as self defence units for neighborhoods as the rule of law was feeble. With the widespread immigration of italians and irish and other europeans, demographics changed and it became impossible for jewish gangs to openly compete and stay lucrative. They either disbanded, were absorbed by larger gangs or went legal. Infact a lot of the early italian gangs were at the time openly considered jewish-italian. Look up Monk Eastman's gang, Murder Inc, Lennox Avenue gang etc.
