Rohit Sharma (considered by most neutrals to be a very good ODI player with the ability to score at a very fast rate) has a strike rate of 82 which is just less than Rayudu's strike rate over the past year. If Rayudu can maintain a strike rate of about 85 from here onwards then I think it is really good. Rahane averages 34 as an opener compared to 28 at #4 (http://howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/PlayerPositions_ODI.asp?PlayerID=3889) but either way it is mediocre and definitely not good enough to displace the current openers' positions. Vijay is already 31. Other players like Shreyas should be given a chance and maybe they will be a better option than Rayudu but instead the selectors try out 30 year old players (hopefully the point of this is to give them one last chance and then never selecting them again if they fail).

The strike rate per se is not a problem in ODIs. A S/R of 80 may be good provided the batsman can accelerate when the situation demands. A batsman like Amla has a good strike rate but he cannot accelerate at will and he will put pressure on the team while chasing big totals - so Amla is more or less a glorified accumulator in ODIs.
