Lawson not up to mark: PCB - Team lacked mental toughness and professionalism: Ashraf

Karachi: Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson on Friday faced the music for the Test and ODI series loss to arch-rivals India with the PCB making it clear that they were not happy with the performance of the Australian. Skipper Shoaib Malik though escaped the heat as PCB reposed faith in his leadership considering that he was still new to the job and learning. PCB chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf found very few positives from the recent tour and said the team’s performance lacked spine and the focus of the players was not completely on cricket. “The team was short on mental toughness and professionalism and the responsibility for this lies with the coach. I am not satisfied with Lawson’s performance. When he returns from his Christmas holidays we will talk to him,†Ashraf said while addressing a press meet in Lahore after meeting captain Malik and manager Talat Ali. Though coach Lawson came in for criticism, Ashraf reposed confidence in Malik insisting the board would be patient with him and give him time to mature and develop into an able leader. Malik has already been retained captain until the end of 2008 but after losing successive series to South Africa and India, his tenure was under scrutiny. “Malik is a promising captain and we will lend him all support. We are confident he will learn and become better with time and we remain committed to our decision to retain him as captain till end of this year,†Ashraf said. The PCB chairman also announced that in future players would not be allowed to write newspaper columns or do media assignments on tours. Malik, vice-captain Younis Khan, Mohammed Yousuf and Shahid Afridi were leading contributors to the Indian newspapers on the recent tour while fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar was a hot favourite on all the Indian television channels. Akhtar has stayed back in India to finalise a deal to act in a Bollywood film. But Ashraf insisted no player was bigger than the team or game. “We have given Shoaib permission to remain in India for two extra days and I hope he comes back on time and concentrates on his cricket because first and foremost he is a professional cricketer,†he said. He also announced that the board would be setting up three coaching camps for opening batsmen, bowlers and wicketkeepers under the supervision of Ejaz Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed and Rashid Latif to scout new talent.

There is a method to their madness: World cup loss => Sack coach, sack captain Series loss vs India => Sack coach or captain. Injury to key bowlers => Bring back Sami. After series against India, sack Sami After Shoaib's antics => If no games are pending vs India, full ban sentence, else ban ends right before the games against India If Farhat & Butt opened last time, pick Taufeeq and Hameed this time & vice versa. If Afridi played in the last series => Sack him If Afridi did not play in the last series => Bring back Afridi If Gul says fit, he's fit If Akhtar says he's not fit, he's fit.

The PCB thread Fasten your set belts folks. The circus has begun!:haha: http://www.gulf-news.com/sport/Cricket/10174337.html
Miandad likely to replace Lawson as Pakistan coach
By K.R. Nayar, Staff Reporter Published: December 12, 2007, 23:32

Bangalore: Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson is likely to lose his job on return to Pakistan. According to information, Javed Miandad may be recalled to coach Pakistan again. It is being reported that quite a few senior cricketers have expressed their dislike at Lawson's style of functioning. Former Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail, who is here as a commentator, said: "Miandad is the right man to coach Pakistan. It will ease the pressure on captain Shoaib Malek." One of the problems lies in the fact that many Pakistan players are unable to properly communicate with Lawson. As an Australian, Lawson's accent is not understood by them. Communication woes Even local reporters in Pakistan have found it difficult to follow what he says. 13_sp_miandad_4.jpg

Lawson defended his team's performance by stating that injuries to main players were the main reason behind Pakistan's unimpressive performance. Many players feel that Lawson did not bother to find out whether the players were fit to play but forced them to play. According to Sohail, there are three captains in the squad and Lawson has not been able to command their respect. Younis Khan has even openly hit out at the team selection. "You need a coach who can command the respect of all the senior players and hence Miandad will be right candidate for the coach's post," feels Sohail. Though Lawson's term is for two years, there is a clause that it is based on performance. The PCB is set to review his performance immediately on return. Malek has been appointed as captain till the end of December 2008 and the PCB is not keen to remove him. They also feel that Malek would need strong support as well as a strong coach to keep the other members in the team under control. Former Pakistan captain Inzamam Ul Haq too expressed his shock over Khan's statement about the team selection. "It is important that such matters are sorted out behind closed doors especially on away tours. There is no point in washing your dirty linen in public. It sends the wrong messages," he said.

Amazing that Lawson is losing his job for his accent, which was apparently comprehensible prior to the tour of India ? Would any sane foreigner take up this job anymore ?
