Does Kohli's 5 bowler strategy develop culture of all-rounders in india?

Kohli is keen on playing an all-rounder. Doesn't know how long he will persist with this strategy. But it is vital for winning the matches. Recently, Australia was criticized for not playing Mitchelle marsh in all important 4th Ashes test. He was included in 5th test and results were there to see....people who see teh scorecard doesn't understand the value of the fifth bowler.......people who have seen the match understand when he has taken the wickets and how important those wickers are...from match perspective Even in our match, i feel Mathews wickets in first innings was very crucial. That wicket made sure, SL was on back foot... It's a good or bad strategy, only time will tell.......But will this encourage new players to take up all-rounder skills more keenly?

Dhoni started it last year and it worked well. After that Kohli picked it up and we now it will encourage more spin bowling all rounders. Regarding fast bowlers it's important to find a fast bowler who can bowl first then we can worry about batting. Ashwin, Jaddu are good spin bowling all rounders in SC tests. Ashwin is a good all rounder away.

For a start I hope all players - right down to number XI - take their batting seriously. There's too much of this "I'm just going to do my part, feck the team" cramp going on. Too many bowlers who don't give a crap about batting. Too many batters who are not able to bowl even part time. Too many players getting out after milestones.

From the articles i have read' date=' Vijay shankar from tamil-nadu could make a debut pretty soon, if Binny is not delivering goods consistently[/quote'] Shankar is a batsman and a part-time bowler, unlike Biinny who is an allrounder in FCs (if not international class). However, Shankar appears to be a much more solid batsman.

Duminy is a bit more than a part-timer... almost a batting allrounder as he has roughly 1 wkt per match. Root and Williamson are more of part-timers. I don't think any of Vijay, Nohit and Kohli have the ability of SRT, Sehwag and Ganguly respectively.

What about Rishi Dhawan as bowling all rounder' date='he has perfomance of last 3 years to back his credentials.[/quote'] Well lets see: As a batsman alone he doesn't make test side. As a bowler I feel he is inferior to Bhuvi, even speed wise slightly. And Bhuvi himself struggles to get a single wicket in tests when ball is not swinging (ie. after 10 overs everywhere bar England). So he does not make team based on bowling. He may end up as a temporarily utility fill in player like Binny. That is not long term option in tests is what I think tbh... Hope we actually find a fast bowler in next few years. Shami has the most potential I think. Shakib gets in for both bat and ball Ashwin gets in for bowling Watson in form was in as batsman Kallis, Sobers in as batsmen The all rounder should be abe to get in as a specialist in side in a way. Mitch Marsh is neither a good enough bat or bowler atm and Aus are trying to get him to contribute but keeping dropping him as well at same time. He is not long term option, they are hoping he is but 1 test later drop him when they discover he only just a bit better than a utility player.

For a start - we need to hope all players reasonably-consistently do their primary part well (batting or bowling) - along with fielding (or wk-keeping). Even this basic thing is not consistent. Lets nail that for a start.

1) Shakib would not get in because of batting - openers are specialized slots and we have one excellent opener (Vijay) and a HTB (Dhawan). He would not displace Kohli, Chepu, Rahane for me. He is better than Nohit, but I reckon there are better bats than Shakib in Indian FC. 2) Watto in form may sneak in as opener (avg around 40-odd if I remember correctly) R. Dhawan is possibly a more effective batsman than Bhuvi even if he seems to be ungainly.

not true....you got it all wrong.. matches are won by how effective your top3 or 4 are in the conditions. we took 20 wkts because ashwin and mishra were in business.end of story
Recently, Australia was criticized for not playing Mitchelle marsh in all important 4th Ashes test.
wonderful...continue the wonderful tradition of racing to stupid conclusions based on a few samples and keep seeing what you want to see. remember praveen is a 24 average bowler based on the 2011 england tour...:hysterical india also tried binny and jadeja in england..didn't make a difference. the big problem with your example is what is the quality of mitchell marsh? what is the quality of binny? australia is not going to win matches because of marsh or any other 5th bowler...their fate is tied to how the likes of hazelwood, pattinson, cummins evolve. if the big guns can come up with the heavy artillery , marsh's utility contributions would help. i.e on the majority cases. Yes marsh is one of the better allrounders in world cricket and australia is not exactly short changed by playing marsh.. but even if someone like marsh was never born, australia is not going to be hurt with the talent they have there are other ways to compensate he is a world class talent but that's not an excuse for playing binny binny is waste of space examples of other teams are irrelevant...australian cricket is not indian cricket and not everything is transferable.
people who see teh scorecard doesn't understand the value of the fifth bowler.......
what is the so called "value"?..there is nothing... if a team bowling lineup's average capacity is 14 wickets. you will only get 14 wickets.4 or 5 or 6 it does not matter,. over a period of 10 -15 tests, this will be the case. your bowling's penetrative levels remains the same unless a superior class of bowler shows up. adding a part time hack or another average bowler is not going to change anything big...you are just sharing the workload a bit more... no quality is being added.so your value is bad logic.. you are not factoring in the guy being added and if he is coming up with anything extra,. extra bowler= extra wickets...what kind of logic is this???????
It's a good or bad strategy, only time will tell.......But will this encourage new players to take up all-rounder skills more keenly?
there is the small matter of 100+ years of test history and i have watched cricket for over 30 years,. there is enough evidence already...don't waste your time... its not possible to play without 6 batsmen...we have struggled to play 5 bowler even when kapil or prabhakar were there. it has taken one test to come from 5 bowlers to 4.25 bowlers..it won't be long before binn y is kicked out as well. these players are just great sportsmen but mediocre intellectually..they are not going to come up with world class startegy anytime soon. i pity the posters who pick from what dhoni or shastri says.

I will take Binny or Rishi Dhawan in a heart beat from what I have seen. Binny looked lackluster with the bat in the 2nd test but from what little I saw of him in England and Australia,He has decent technique against pace. In ODI's he has been consistent with the ball so he has sealed his spot for some time. Bowling wise I don't see a lot that seperates Binny from Dhawan. So for now as unfortunate as it sounds we are stuck with Binny as our main allrounder.

Stats wise, there is plenty - one avgs less than 2 wkts per match while the other takes around 4.5 per match. Averages are apart by around 7 as well. Clearly shows that Binny functions as so-called batting allrounder while Dhawan's stats are good enough as pure bowler. To be fair, Dhawan's performances were mostly on green tracks. But, on these same green tracks, he avgs around 40 with the bat which is higher than that of "batting allrounder" Binny.

having bowlers and batsmen with excellent to good averages would do...there is no need for an allrounders. yes there are some other teams who ahve genuine allroudners...but it has not resulted in world beating feats or miracles.. for all of kallis and pollock, sa were always beaten by the specialists of australia. pakistan literally spoilt its batting for years by including too many allrounders. our problem is not the allrounder but lack of pacers with decent averages outside asia. i am pretty happy if we never get an allrounder.. world class specialists would do the same job any given day.
