Desi Cartman Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I am considering doing it but it's pretty expensive (almost $1,000) so I'd appreciate if you can share your views or experiences of TM. Those of you who dont know much about it: https://www.tm.org/ http://www.webmd.com/balance/guide/transcendental-meditation-benefits-technique uh7Yru3cHoA and yes, Jerry made me consider it but in the last few weeks some doctors have suggested it. It helps with multiple health issues including depression, BP, insomnia, anxiety or it just makes you feel a lot better.
amiret Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 Don;t know much about TM . but from that webmd link : the person practicing TM sits in a comfortable position with eyes closed and silently repeats a mantra. A mantra is a meaningless sound from the Vedic tradition that’s been assigned by a certified instructor. why does it cost a $1000 for "a meaningless sound/mantra" ? I have heard only the Certified Instructor can assign you this special mantra .
dial_100 Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 I don't want to comment on what TM does but all of this is free and much more powerful if you look in the right places. Wow money charged for meditation?
Desi Cartman Posted August 27, 2015 Author Posted August 27, 2015 I have read some really good things about it and its been recommended by two doctors. My problem is that I cant stand Sadhu's or any kind of babas. Plus as most of you mentioned, the fees of 1k seems weird. It includes 4 1:1 classes, introduction is obviously "Free". I dont know why they charge so much money when they can have this stuff online for free. I will attend the introduction and find out what it is all about.

ravishingravi Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Well it is pretty good technique. Basic though but still effective. It does provide great deal of clarity. 1000 $ is Too high though. In India, it is around 2500 rupees.
Brainfade Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 It is a movement that charlatan "Maharishi" Mahesh "Yogi" started many decades ago. Three white guys came to my school in Bengaluru when I was in 7th or 8th standard (1981-82) and taught us to meditate on secret mantras. Each kid had his own secret word - you'd better not reveal it to anyone. Mine was "Anga" or "Inga" or something like that. They even told us that, if we got really good at it, we could levitate. And back then, all 12 year olds believed the white guy in a suit and cool anglicized Hindi. Considering that it has been around for so many decades and there are no credible medical reports of that it really works to decrease BP etc., it is likely a scam. Bottom line? You are wasting your time. You can meditate at home by sitting cross-legged in a quiet space and putting on some melodious instrumental music. If you so want to spend a $1000, send it on to me. I just gave you better advice than Jerry, who is just propagating the latest Hollywood fashionable thing-to-do and laughing his way to the bank with endorsement $$. I even wonder if those "doctors" are on the take, too. More reading regarding TM: http://skepdic.com/tm.html

Even if its good, it may not be worth 1k. I have seen so many desi and videshi CEOs following Gurus in the Bay Area that Im sure TM is also one of the "in" things.
Desi Cartman Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 Absurdity of the bolded part will hit you at some point. No, its called "questioning". yoga or meditation are all good, perhaps some gurus also mean well. I just dont like the idea of following babas.

You can chant any word for a mantra silently or just gently focus on your breath. Charging $1000 for it is daylight robbery. I hate these types of babas as well. Goras usually gravitate to any kind of eastern religion bullshyt. Why do you think Deepak Chopra is so successful?

You will have to find one to learn the real meditation. Question is how to find one. Just a small hint, the real ones these days are in plain clothes, doing just regular stuff that you and I do. They don't reveal who they are but if you find one, I am sure you should not be charged money to learn it. Learning it is the MOST easy/difficult thing depending on how to take it. But if you are spending a dime on anything like that, almost certainly, you will get BIG ZIRO out of it. enough said. Good luck.
