Some issues i) a) Snickometer takes 5-10 mins, so it can't be used. b) How do you detect outside edges without it? Go by the deflection of the ball or the recorded sound? c) Caught down the leg might be even tougher to detect where the deflection is usually very thin (an example would be the drop catch by Gilchrist. It wasn't clear at all that Dravid nicked it). ii) How to use Hawkeye? I think a Hawkeye can definitely be used to overrule completely incorrect decisions i.e, when Hawkeye shows that the ball is missing the stumps all together or when it's hitting the middle and off/leg. But what to do about marginal ones such as where Hawkeye shows that the ball hits the bail or the outside part of the leg/off stump? iii) What to do about marginal/inconclusive decisions in general? (especially when there's a challenge system). Should the umpire's decision be upheld? If yes, what happens to the challenge? It's not fair that a team's total number of challenges are reduced because the replays were inconclusive. iv) It seems that most challenges will be against top order batsmen? (as they come earlier in the order). Maybe have 2 challenges per batsman? (is that too many?) v) Who challenges? The bowler? The captain? How much time do they have before challenging? Also, should one batsman's incorrect challenge hurt the rest of the batsmen? (who might not be left with any more challenges). vi) Where should technology be used right away? Definitely pitched outside the leg or hitting outside the off is a prime candidate, as also detecting edges which result in a sure shot deflection. I think we need to put up some system and start using it. The rules will get modified as more and more games are played. But hopefully ICC doesn't put up a system and then stop it because suddenly they feel that there are some problems with the new system as well. (I also believe that the players, the technical committee etc will not come up with the most intelligent system. So, one of the fans/journalists will have to suggest a really good system and pass it on to the Indian players and ICC. Hari Sampath has some connections, right? :)
