The selection of Hardik Pandya in the test squad for England series has again open the debate on whether a player should be selected on the basis on performance shown in the domestic cricket or the percieved talent he posses

Hardik Pandya was originally not selected in the squad for the A series in Australia. But he got a lucky break when Vijay Shankar was injured & he got a chance to play in the A series in both 4 day game as well as odi series.

He grab the oppurtunity to play under Rahul Dravid & impressed him as he scored a 79 when the team had collapsed ,which included young batting talents ie Karun Nair,Manish Pandey etc .He also bowled with experienced bowlers ie Shardul Thakur & Aaron & was also impressive with his 140 kmph + speeds & economical overs.

Next he was selected for odi series against New Zealand & he impressed with his speeds & control in his 1st odi as he bagged his 1st wicket in his 1st over & also man of the match in his 1st odi.He also impressed with his batting when he got the oppurtunity.

But it was a big surprise when his name figured in the 15 man squad in the home series against England.

He has hardly played any domestic matches for his home side Boroda & he was selected  for such a high profile series.

There are many players who are not selected in the squad inspite of consistent performance in the domestic cricket. Is it not a injustice to players like Pankaj Singh ,Shahbaz Nadeem ,Shreyas Iyer ,Shardul Thakur who are among the best perfomer in.Ranji trophy but are not selected in favour of players who are percieved more talented then them

Hardik Pandya is not competing with any of the players mentioned above. The team is not in need of the the player 'types' above at the moment. HP is competing with players like Stuart Binny and Rishi Dhawan.

First and foremost, players who have the potential and the game to succeed in international cricket should be the only ones that are selected for Team India.  For pacers that would mean having sufficient pace and bounce , reasonable skills and a stock delivery. Someone of a Vinay Kumar's pace, bounce and skill combo will never do well as a bowler in internationals , no matter how  well he does in domestic cricket.

Similarly, a batsman must have the ability to play genuine pace and have a clear idea of where his off-stump is ....for him to succeed in test matches.  Those batsmen who display these weaknesses should not be picked for tests even if they are super performers at domestic level. For ODIs, we should look for batters who have the ability to hit quick bowlers and the ability to rotate strike.  Most  Indian batsmen have the basic ability to play spin unless we are playing on rank turners ( although this ability has deteriorated in the last 5 years )

Only those spinners succeed regularly in international cricket who have the ability to get zip and bounce off the pitch. Additionally, those spinners who put a lot of revs on the ball and get good side spin on neutral tracks are the special talents to nurture for international cricket.

Among the players who have the potential and game to succeed in international cricket....the need of the team regarding types of players often decide who gets a nod. Like the case of  Pandya who has been selected as the team needs a pacer-allrounder.

Performance at FC and List A level should matter much more when the opposition is strong and also in big games....like A team matches and tours, Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy etc. featuring India Red, Blue and Green having the best players from all over India, performance against touring sides for BP XI games,  Ranji Trophy finals  etc.   Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Nathu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Gopal,  Mayank Agarwal etc. doing well in these matches will place them above other contenders.

If Pandya is competing against Rishi ,Rishi has very good numbers in both batting & bowling department.In.last ranji match also ,Rishi has a 7 fer.

Pandya has only been selected because he has been percieved as more talented than Binny & Rishi.

I think confidence shown by Pandya plays a huge role in his selection. He is not a finished product in both batting & bowling but he has the confidence to raise the bar when required.

Despite having made his first-class debut for Baroda back in the year 2013, Hardik Pandya has played just 16 matches so far with 727 runs at an average of around 28 and 22 wickets.

Dhawan has easily been the finest seam-bowling all-rounder in the Indian domestic arena with a batting average of over 40 and more than 200 wickets in 55 first-class matches.

There has to be one more option Need of the team, which is above all.

Hardik pandya is the kind of player our team has been wanting for ages, so he gets selected automatically. Other contenders like binny n rishi were really poor so the door was open for Pandya. Had we have stokes n marsh also playing for India Pandya would have found it tough for yrs n yrs to get into the team

Pandya was selected last min for ODi in Aus-A but injury to vijay shankar also helped him get a place in 4 day games

It wasnt pandya fault not being selected in 1st place , but it was previous selection committee poor judgement

The whole justice word is stupid, if a team has warne many times macgill will be left out.

Pankaj singh, thakur are fast bowlers so they ll compete with fast bowlers and there is no place there

Nadeem is not international material

Iyer again will contest with middle order batsman

Pandya selection has got nothing to do with Injustice to others. Pandya is the need of the not people mentioned above.

Pandya would not be in the squad had there not been injury problems.. he's lucky in that sense, and ideally needed one more season of FC cricket but he's coming off the back of decent A team performances. It's a good selection hope he does great
