Australia v South Africa: Bowling coach David Saker says James Pattinson, Pat Cummins could be options for India tour

Saker spoke to Grandstand at Adelaide Oval, revealing his thoughts on possible additions to Australia's bowling line-up.

Asked how many bowlers came under his remit as bowling coach, Saker said that while he dealt primarily with the bowlers in the Test squad, there were "10 or 12 that we keep a close eye on and watch their results in Shield cricket and monitor how they're going".

"Obviously (James) Pattinson and (Pat) Cummins are the two that will probably come up (in discussions) quite often," he said.

"It's good to see Patty Cummins coming back to the one-day cricket, and at the moment Jimmy Pattinson is playing some grade cricket and he'll probably play some Big Bash. So after Christmas he might be an option."

The injury-plagued paceman Cummins has played just one Test, claiming seven wickets and hitting the winning runs in a much-praised debut against South Africa in Johannesburg almost exactly five years ago in November 2011.

A succession of injuries have kept him out of Australian first-class cricket since the 2011 Sheffield Shield final, but he has returned to cricket with a successful stint for New South Wales in the 2016 domestic one-day competition, and earlier this month in the Future's League.

Pattinson has played 17 Tests, but has also had injury problems, and was out of action from February until early November 2016 with a bone stress injury in his leg and then stress fractures in his back.

Saker said he thought that Australia should not rush either player back.

"But Patty Cummins, I'd just like to see him get through some one day cricket and some really high intensity cricket," he said.

"He's come back through Future's League, and some one-day cricket for NSW.

"But when you get up to international cricket, that level just goes up a bit ... we just want to see them play and probably just get through the rest of the summer.

"One for them, and being confident with their body, and two we probably need them going forward after that. We don't want to rush them, that's for sure."

Saker said that while next summer was a possible target for a return for both bowlers, he would not rule out an earlier call-up.

Starc is a big one in their team and Hazlewood is more than handy. Pattinson could fill in for that third seamer role which is a big hole right now. they are rotating that position.

Hazleood is the biggest threat for me as far as Aussie bowlers are concerned. I think he is the one who puts in the right areas most of the time, compared to Starc or any other bowler. Yes, Pattinson had a good start against us, but if there is one seamer in the world who I would have in my team other than some Protea bowlers, it is Hazlewood. 

 

Hazlewood will test our openers, in particular Vijay who has had some ordinary run in these last few months.  We need to watch out for him. If we can keep him at bay, we shall win the series comfortably.

All 3 are dangerous if play together. Hazelwood is a steady bowler, not going to win matches in these conditions but good support to Starc in SC conditions. Start is the real threat in SC. He was the only saving grace for Aus in SL

In these conitions, Indian batsmen won't get done by pace unlike SL players who just could not play him. SL newbies are still learning and are absolutely timid. We have a settled batting middle order trio who shouldn't be troubled by Starc in these conditions. 

 

Don't go by what Starc did to SL batsmen. There is a world of difference between Indian batsmen and Sri Lankans. His biggest challenge awaits him in India. Starc lacks consistency for a test bowler. He has had a brilliant ODI run in last year or two and an extremely good Sri lankan series. There are better test bowlers out there.

 

Starc does possess pace and he might come handy when it is almost end of the innings and Australia need few quick wickets to wrap up the Indian tail. But it is Hazlewood who will find the edges from the bat of Kohli, Pujara, Rahane trio along with questioning Murali Vijay. Hazlewood has the consistent line which is just perfect for Indian wickets. I will pick him as the pick of the Australian bowler. I would like to see him getting thrashed by our players but he is just too good a bowler.

Our tailenders will do jack against Starc.. batsmen need to step up big time. Australian batting is a relief though. But they can improve... Here's hoping for a good series.
