But then also notice that he has hit 6 fifties in last 13 inning, that's once in every 2 inning. Only Pujara and Rahul have hit more 50+ scores than him. Kohli and Rahane both have 4 50+ scores each. So likes of Kohli, Rahane, Vijay, Ashwin and Saha have been less consistent than him. He has been consistent and his average is reflection of how he has batted. He has scored more runs than Ashwin, Saha and Vijay during this period and is 66 runs short of Rahane. At least, has to be tested because his record as a first class cricketer & also these test stats prove that he has high chance of succeding.A player with 3 triple 100s & also 43+ avg: in first class cricket shows that he has the temperament to play long inns when conditions truly favour him. Another strong point to issue this case is that out of the 10 not out scores he has till now, 7 of them are 30+ scores. And in his last 22 inns he remained not out 8 times, of which 6 are 30+ scores & 5 are 42+ scores . In this period his record is as follows. 15 22 8 641 90 45.78 920 69.70 0 7 1 49 24 To avg: 45.78 @ str: rate of 69.70 along with 7 50s shows that he has come up a lot as a batsman.Even if he scored at the least 91 runs more in these 8 not out scores had he went on with these & eventually remained with 2 not outs only , he would still have avg:ed around 37. A 37 avg:ing left handed batsman with around 70 str: rate in the middle order is a huge plus giving various options for the team in all conditions. Link to comment
Tibarn
Sunny was comparing Jaddu to Kapil Dev during commentary... he was saying that like Kapil, Jaddu looks like a proper batsman in terms of range of shots, but both their mindsets is that of smashing boundaries rather than building an innings. Guy has scored multiple triple centuries in domestic cricket, so he does have the patience to play long innings. The question is do we care about jaddu the batsman, for me he should keep working on his bowling, he is the best fielder in world thats always a bonus as a batsman keep doing what he has been doing. His batting ability is going to be important overseas. There is only 1 spot for a spinner in our XI when we tour outside Asia, so I would say there is a direct competition between Jaddu and Ash for the spinner spot. If team management views their bowling ability to be similar, then Ashwin will likely get the nod, as he is a superior batsman thus far. Link to comment

Jaddu or Kuldeep can't bat at No.6 We will most likely see from No.6 onward Ashwin Pandya Saha Bhuvi / Ishant Shami Umesh Kuldeep or Jaddu can play only if we play 2 spinners. Jaddu can play if we drop Pandya and play 3 specialist pacers.... but Kuldeep can't in this case as he is not considered as an all-rounder. Edited August 7, 2017 by express bowling Link to comment

I think if we pick only 1 of Ash/Jaddu, we have to focus on their bowling. If their bowling is roughly equal, then we can pick Ashwin, as he is the superior batsman thus far, but if we include both Pandya and Bhuvi in the XI overseas, I think we have enough leeway to pick the better spinner. If we select Ashwin as a batting allrounder, then it seems like a waste. If we aren't confident enough in his ability to bowl overseas as a front-line spinner, then it is better to look elsewhere and either select a proper batsman at 6 or include a bowler we consider superior. I think Jaddu will be the better bowler out of Asia as he does better on unhelpful tracks. Kuldeep maybe even better as he showed in the Dharamsala test first innings on an Australia-type pitch. That being said, I don't see Saha, Pandya or Jadeja batting at No.6 out of Asia. That will weaken the middle-order a lot. 6th batsman Saha Jadeja Bhuvi Shami Umesh is possible but then (a) We will play only 4 bowlers (b) Ashwin maybe better than Rohit ( likely 6th batter ) as a test batsman anyway Link to comment

Achieving such a high peak wont be possible if only one of these two skills is dominating. One more thing I would like to add. We are yet to see a true alrounder who is as good in both the departments and could make the team on both counts. None of Botham, Imran, Kapil, Pollock would make the team on batting alone. Neither Kallis would make the team on bowling alone. Was there anyone who could do that? Botham for first 50 tests was a beast, he would make any team either as a batsman or bowler. He is only player for those fifty tests who could walk into any team either a bowler or batsmen. If we filter out Subcontinent and Windies, thus comparing the trio's stats in NZ+Aus+Eng+SA, we can see how they stack up: Ashwin: Bhuvi: Jaddu: The overall numbers for matches in those 4 countries are: Ashwin Batting: 28.57 avg with 4 Not Outs and a High Score of 62 Bowling: 56.58 avg and 104.2 SR Jaddu: Batting: 22.25 avg with 1 Not Out and a High Score of 68 Bowling: 46.16 avg and 102.4 SR Bhuvi: Batting: 29.70 avg with 2 Not Outs and a High Score of 63* Bowling: 33.7 avg and 64.4 SR So I think if we are willing to to play Ashwin at 6 as a batsman with his bowling as a bonus, then we can do similar with either Bhuvi or Jaddu. Bhuvi in particular comes out favorably in this comparison as his bowling is miles ahead of that of Ash/Jaddu. If we consider Bhuvi as an allrounder, we can even try a specialist spinner like Kuldeep. We can gamble with Pandya as the #6, as there is no harm, in my opinion, of developing him at that spot overseas. 1) Vijay 2) Rahul 3) Pujara 4) Kohli 5) Rahane 6) Pandya 7) Saha 8) Bhuvi 9) Kuldeep/Ishant 10) Shami 11) Umesh So I feel we don't have to be compelled to play either Ash or Jaddu for their batting abilities when Bhuvi has also shown to be similarly capable( in those 4 countries) with the bat. I think we need to select our attack, especially the spinner, based on taking the 20 wickets needed to win. Link to comment
express bowling
@ Tibarn Ashwin has improved a lot as a test batsman starting from the WI tour 2016. He is averaging almost 35 in this period with 2 centuries. Bhuvi's current form with the bat is totally unknown. He scored 50+ last time 3 years back and is likely to bat below No.8 if he gets to play. Ashwin can be and most probably will be used as No.6. Neither of Pandya or Bhuvi will bat at No.6. Pandya is not getting a chance even at No.7 in this series. Edited August 7, 2017 by express bowling Link to comment
