I would even go to the extent of saying he is one of main reasons why we have the 8-10 record against the Aussies in the last decade. Be it the Kolkata epic, or his innings in Adelaide and in Sydney in 2003 or now in Perth, he has been instrumental in helping us to stay competitive against the Aussies. As Bumps said, the one lone series in 2004 in which he failed totally, we lost. And how ironic is it, that Yuvraj Singh, who hasnt played even 10th of the important innings that Laxman has played in test cricket, just landed a multi-million dollar deal with a marketing company. Just goes on to show the media is after sale-able stars with handsome looks and colgate smiles. What a pity !

I just love the way he bats' date=' reminds me of Azhar![/quote'] Yes, he does, but IMO he is more talented and technically better than Azhar. They both display/displayed the typical Hyderabadi flair of batsmenship- amazing silken cover drives and amazing wristy play. Azhar was a God on the legside- its one area, where i think Azhar had no betters and only a few equals. I remember watching him bat through the 90s, with an incredibly young and invicible-looking Tendulkar and he'd look as good as any on display playing on the legside. But Azhar also had a few major flaws in his batting- his stance was too closed- which ofcourse gave him a good chance to use his amazing wristwork to crash deliveries comming in to him on the legside. But it also made him vulnerable to the short rising one (which the west indians of those times mercilessly exploited) and he was also vulnerable to sustained good bowling outside the offstump. Laxman on the other hand doesn't look quite as imperious as Azhar on the legside, though it must be said that Laxman's legside shots and his 'pick-up-outside off-deposit-over-midwicket-with-just-a-flick' is truly alltime great. But he is definitely far more confident on the offside and if he has a clear vulnerability, its the ball just outside off comming back in or the yorker swinging in from outside offstump in the early part of his innings. Both have IMO underachieved in tests, largely because of lapses in concentration. Laxman ofcourse, has the added ( and very legitimate excuse) of being continuously f*cked around with by the selectors to blame atleast a part of his lapses. And lastly, another thing i'd like to add here- those mindless gits who were touting Yuvraj, please realize that Yuvraj will NEVER be as good as Laxman in tests and Laxman is only 31-32 or so. He doesn't get to play ODIs and i can see him giving very valuable service for atleast anothe 4 years. Tendu and Dravid maynot be back again in Australia, but Laxman should.

But when you watch him play - taking a length ball from Brett Lee at 150 kmh, flicking his wrists over and sending it right between mid on and midwicket, then taking an identical ball two minutes later and stroking it through cover... or coming down the track, and alternately driving Shane Warne through cover and point or flicking through midwicket and square leg from the same length and line - that is true brilliance. There are plenty of batsmen who average better than him, and some with better numbers vs. Aus as well - but very few close for that combination of class, grace, sheer brilliance of strokeplay and the ability to deliver against the best under pressure. Only others who comes to mind are Sachin and Lara. talksport 1

VVS played that shot ... comming down the track and just flicking it for a six over long off ... all bottom hand ... no violence ... sheer timing and grace and that unbelievable wrist work. Not to forget the jaw dropping inside out cover drive he played from outside leg stump in the 2nd test at Eden off Warne! Magical.
