Thats a big call. I know he gets a huge amount of hype but that is based on a few tests and then county stints- I know the quality of county bowling was good and all but surely the test records of Gavaskar, Viru and Smith should trump that

the reason he gets so much hype is that a lot of the players at that time from diff countries played in counties or in the packer series, etc. and there have been enough eye-witness accounts from that era which indicate that barry richards was a special talent. of course, I spiced up my comment deliberately to invite some comments. would select sunny g ahead of barry r, but not sehwag.

You have to take combined eleven from 1992 since their readmission , there is no point in taking older players.

why? is it because india was mostly pathetic prior to 90s whereas SA had its golden run in the late 60s to late 70s?

I won't include the likes of Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Procter and Adcock because of low sample size in test cricket, can't choose a team based on first class and exhos (even though I rate these players very very highly) !!! BTW OP 5-6 is a very unfair distribution because historically SA has been a far far far better team than us, at least 4-7 ka luxury de dete yaar because picking 5 Indians for matches outside Asia is unfair on Saffers.

In Asia:

Gavaskar

Sehwag

Dravid

SRT

Kallis

ABDV (wk)

Pollock

Ashwin

Kumble (c)

Steyn

Donald

6 Indians and 5 Saffers

Outside Asia:

Gavaskar

Graeme Smith (c)

Amarnath

Kallis

SRT

ABDV (wk)

Kapil

Pollock

Steyn

Bedi

Donald

6 Saffers and 5 Indians

What I don't like about these 2 teams is the absence of LHBs and a non specialist as keeper albeit ABDV has some talent in that department as well. I don't see this team competing against the ATG WI or Aus teams.

none can. ATG SA (with graeme pollock, barry r, etc in the mix) and maybe ATG Eng (because of pre-war cricketers) can come a bit close.

Lol, just for a challenge. And to see what combs people chose... and yes there will not be many Indians in the XI without the rule

Not hard to fathom when you look at the footage. He did well in Packer but looks completely mediocre.

doesn't matter if he "looks" mediocre (which he does not), what matters is scoring runs. sehwag, barring some innings, looked ordinary/mediocre outside SC.

He doesn't look mediocre?

And of course, it matters how their technique is. I would go with Smith over Sehwag though.

neither chanderpaul nor steven smith have orthodox techniques. that didn't stop them from being highly effective runscorers.

I never said they have to have orthodox techniques. But there has to be some element of footwork, which clearly isn't the case for Richards. Smith might have an unorthodox technique but it certainly isn't bad or lacking (although that might change once his hand eye deteriorates in a couple of years).

barry richards did well in packer, in the few tests he played, and in eng and oz domestics. there are plenty of eyewitness accounts by contemporaries as well. I agree sample size is low to judge him wrt smith/sehwag, but this is not his fault. anyway, my original post had been prior to realizing that poster asked for 6 SA and 5 ind in XI. with these constraints, it makes sense to have sunny g and smith/richards IMO.

Can't think of better combo than Smith and gavaskar since he is also a very shrewd captain, Dravid provides the stability
With stroke makers in such, ab and Jack, paaji is the power hitter along with ab and jumbo is a very handy lower order bat, kallis steyn, Donald and paaji are my 4 fast bowlers with kumble as spinner if in Asia I would also add ashwin along with Pollock for the back up.
