Tendulkar Vs Dravid - Who's Better

Rahul Dravid pips Tendulkar, just, in terms of his test achievements. Without an iota of doubt, Rahul is our best ever test batsman. If today, we can hold our heads proud about our test record since 2000, Rahul has a massive contribution to it. Of course, a close investigation will reveal Tendulkar had some significant contributions in those successes, but Rahul is my man as far as test cricket is concerned. BUT, in terms of his overall contribution to the game in India, the kind of impact he has had on general populace, Tendulkar is miles ahead of any other contemporary sportsman. Hardly very few people realize that Tendulkar's contribution to Indian cricket and in general, the sense of Indian pride, transcends multiple boundaries. He is not merely a cricketer, he is an icon, an object of national pride. The name "Sachin" will never fail to evoke a pride filled smile on any Indian's face. He is in his own legion in terms of his contribution to Indian cricket. Therefore, its no surprise that many of today's Indian cricketers, including Rahul Dravid himself, consider him as an idol. I have always believed the true impact Sachin has had on the game in India will dawn on most people only the day retires and unfortunately, that day is not too far off.

Can we close this thread? I think it is absolutely insulting to the two great batsmen of the same team to be compared! And what do you mean by "when the team needs"? You think the team doesn't need them always? This the the most rubbish statement I've read. As for batsmen under pressure, you can read one full article in the article section. At the moment, let us discuss just cricket on the cricket forum!

Unless we back with stats, all these kinds of superficial prose on their favorite batsman doesn't constitute as facts. I can show how Dravid stats fall down when there is a better bowling attack. Once in 1999 could be called an abberation. But, it has happened too many times to not believe it.

Thats something ppl here don't get. Great post though :two_thumbs_up: Especially when ppl say SCG scored those centuries against minnows in WC 2003 - we probably would have lost those games if it wasn't for SCG. I say those runs should be in fact more valuable since one of those 100's came in the semi-final.

SRT is out most valuable player in ODIs .In tests he is slightly below R Drvid .

If I analyze it will definitely be SRT But if I try to feel, my inside always tells me RD is just a bit better than SRT. I still enjoy RD's defense of off Lee right on the middle of the bat with a PROMISING sound that I am a wall.... That is the only thing I love about test cricket. Rest is just a game.

I like it when Sachin defends the ball with such a steady back hand, the ball is placed right next to the bowler goes to the boundary line behind the bowler between the long on and long off.

Well said, each of us get a joy from different aspects. For you, its the sight of Dravid getting solidly behind a ball bowled at 90 mph, and dead-batting it. For others, it may be the sight of a glorious cover-drive or a super-fast bowler running in furiously. Ultimately, cricket is just a game designed to entertain us all. Unfortunately, most people are obsessed with just the results, and mix sports with misplaced notions of nationalism and patriotism. Those are merely ploys by the media to spice up their broadcasts, that is all. At the end of the day, as the cliche goes, its just a game !

Ok...if Dravid is a better batter than Sachin, overall.....then Adam Hollioake is a better allrounder than Gary Sobers....duh

dravid better test career overall. has seen us through clutch situations more than any other recent test bat. SRT obviously the best ODI bat ever. and chandan, yes people can be compared. to suggest closing the thread is absurd.

What about the fact that Sachin has been playing since 1989 and Rahul only 6 years later ? How many test matches/ODI matches have been influenced by rahul ( odis negatively influenced will be 100 min)

I agree with MM on the above. Tests - Dravid has a slight edge over SRT. ODIs - SRT clearly better than RD.

what about my Ganguly VS Flower :D
Andy Flower is the better one :icflove::D
A.Flower is a minnow who is a basher. SCG is a minnow basher (though the icf-member living enjoys those minnow bashing knocks :D)

Dravid is a great, but it is seriously BS to say he is better than Tendy in ANY form of the game. There is only one batsman from his era that seriously deserves comparison and thats Lara. As far as Tests go, its Tendulkar, then Lara, then everyone else in my eyes. Yes, Dravid has played some crucial knocks in the recent past but Tendulkar has played several such knocks in the past too- the only difference is, when Tendy carried India's batting in the 90s, it was a strictly one-man-show and often ended in defeats, because India had a much weaker bowling attack in comparison. Ie, while you can argue that Kumble+ Srinath was a better bowling combo, it is also fairly categoric that back then, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka had better bowling resources. Today, its Australia and South Africa that have superior bowling resources, with the gap between India and the others non-existant/much more diminished. As such, it is only logical that with this diminished gap in bowling capabilities, crucial knocks by Indian batsmen NOW turn into victories/draws more often than not. But Tendy's record is immaculate- his only blemish is doing moderately against South Africa and even then, he distinctly heads Dravid in that regard when Donald-Pollock were a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention, Tendy absolutely dominated Australia when they were at their peak, while Dravid essentially had only ONE good home series vs McWarne and cashed in on a much weaker attack in 2003. Make no mistake, Dravid is a great, but he is not in the same bracket as Tendulkar, Lara, Viv,Gavaskar,Sobers, Chappell, Border,Steve Waugh etc. He is just a shade below, with the likes of Ponting, Kallis, Inzy, Miandad, etc. for his comrades. It must also be mentioned that Tendulkar's runs carry a higher value, simply because he made them against TOP QUALITY bowling attacks when pitches were far more bowler friendly than today. Tendu used to average 60+ in an era when 350 was a very good first innings score, Dravid has the same kind of record when 400-500 are regularly reeled off in the first innings. Tendulkar (and also Laxman) has a wider range of shots they can play to the same ball- which is one of the MAIN reasons why Dravid's strike rate is low in both tests and ODIs- his technique is immaculate, his shot-selection almost always perfect but he cannot improvise his shots/adjust them like Tendy/VVS can.
