‘We can forgive but cannot brush it under the table’ - Faf Du Plessis on Sarfraz Ahmed’s racial remark

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has said that the team has forgiven Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed for his racial remarks on one of their players.

“We forgive him because he said sorry. He has apologised and taken responsibility for it. It is out of our hands and ICC will have to deal with it now,” ESPNcricinfo quoted du Plessis, as saying.

Sarfraz had hurled racial remarks at the South African batsman Andile Phehlukwayo during their second one-day match of the ongoing five-match series at the Kingsmead Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Du Plessis said that they did not take the incident lightly but since he immediately apologised for the same, it shows that there is regret. He, however, added that they have forgiven the player but are not willing to brush the matter under the table.

“When you come to South Africa, you have to be very careful when you make racial comments. I am sure he didn’t mean it like that but he has taken responsibility and we will have to see what the outcome of that is going to be. This is not something that we take lightly as a team, but the fact that he apologised straight away means there is regret on his part,” du Plessis said.

“We’re not taking it lightly, but that fact that there was an immediate apology shows there is regret. We can forgive but that doesn’t mean we brush it under the table,” he added.

When asked about Phehlukwayo reaction on the incident, the right-hand batsman said that the player did not even notice the comment.

“Andy [Phehlukwayo] says he didn’t even notice it and thus felt it wasn’t really directed at him. I suppose maybe because we didn’t understand it makes a bit of a difference. But it certainly doesn’t sit well with us. There seemed to be immediate regret,” du Plessis said.

South Africa had won the second match against Pakistan to level the ongoing series 1-1. Both the teams are slated to play their third ODI on January 25 at the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium.

BBL 2018-19: CA issues a final warning to the spectators after ‘Its OK to be White’ banner

https://www.crictracker.com/bbl-2018-19-ca-issues-a-final-warning-to-the-spectators-after-its-ok-to-be-white-banner/

On 24th January, Sydney Thunder registered a six-wicket win over hosts Perth Scorchers during the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season. While it was an exciting match, but sadly, a banner in the stands meant that the match will be discussed for the wrong reasons. Three men displayed a banner which read “Its OK to be white” during the Perth Scorchers’ innings. The banner was displayed for five minutes before it was taken down but Cricket Australia (CA) has taken note of the situation.

A CA spokesperson revealed that the three men suspected of unfurling the banner were removed from the venue. He also told that CA has issued a final warning to the three.

“Three people in question were immediately removed from the venue and they will be issued a first and final warning from Cricket Australia,” a CA spokesperson said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The spokesperson claimed that CA has a zero-tolerance policy while dealing with such anti-social elements. He further added that the board is very serious about dealing with racial vilifications at the matches conducted by them. Spokesperson requested supporters and members of CA to move forward and report those fans who engage in such anti-social behaviour.

CA thinking about issuing bans

These banners carried the slogan “it’s OK to be white” which gained popularity in October. An Australian senator put forward a motion declaring  “it’s OK to be white”. This motion got the support of the Australian senators when they passed it. Later, the motion was rejected by the senators when they voting against second time around in the Senate.

The spokesperson further said that the cricket body intends to make their message loud and clear that they don’t support racism. He added that the fans engaging in such activities risk being getting banned from attending matches in Australia. “Our message to any fan attending a match is that if you display anti-social behaviour you will be removed. They risk being banned from any cricket match across Australia, along with police action,” he said.

ICC has banned Sarfraz for 4 ODIs. Can you imagine ICC banning players of any other boards like BCCI, ACB, ECB without giving them a chance to ban themselves? And funniest thing, after giving no punishment to the player themselves, PCB think the ban is too harsh and will contest it

And PCB is trying to go against ICC ... I have heard of incompetent people but these guys takes the trophy. You have a captain who is racially abusing another team member, instead of adding on to the punishment they want to brush is under the carpet and thinks a simple sorry will take care of it.

4 odi ban is fair. They need to quit complaining. You cannot say racist stuff and expect to get away with it.

If they are still complaining they still don't understand they did something wrong. Shameful.
