If we are going to include a specialist batsman why do we need Pant. We have plethora of talents like Gill, Shaw, Agarwal, Iyer. They can field better as well. Atleast some of them. His game can be a lottery. We don't know what we are going to get. With 4 tailenders India cannot afford to waste space on a one-dimensional player who may or may not click. Let me put out a stat for you. Pant and SHankar have played together in 8 games Shankar 8 matches 5 innings 126 runs 25.20 average 140 strike rate Pant 8 matches 8 innings 155 runs 22.14 average 122.94 strike rate Shankar can bowl, He can field better. Why do you think they will go for Pant instead of Say Iyer or Gill? Pant has played 10 tests too, where he averages 49 at SR of 73.Both Pant & Rahul had bad ODI stats before the WC. See,how Rahul is batting right now.Pant is more of Maxwell/Heytmeyer type batsman, who looks stupid when he gets out, tries too many shots.Neither of their teams have dropped them either. The problem with Pant I see is chasing far off deliveries & losing shape or those reverse sweep shots. He needs to be told to not do that.He is a power hitter & should be in the team for that purpose. Our batting can finally be a match to England's. I don't want another specialist batsman in this team. Our top 3 is specialist enough to bat 30-35 overs in decent pitches more often than not. Don't rate his bowling much. Shankar gives good fielding, unconvincing lower order batting & bowling. He can stay in the squad for fielding as substitute. Pant gives good hitting, bad fielding. He can stay in the slips. Dhoni is not going to play forever. He is the default keeper for the future. At the most one year. Who knows. He might retire this year. Pant is not competing with Shankar. He is competing with Dhoni at this point. Whether we rate shankar bowling or not as long as his bowling is better than Pant's bowling that is all we need. 34 year old Jadhav may not play for long. His dibbly dobbly side spin won't be available. India will need a 6th bowling option. He and Jadeja are the only two available.

Pandya & Jadeja sharing 10 overs is more assuring. If he fields full 50 overs & gets couple of run-outs of set batsmen ,that would be great. Jaddu is a known selfish batsman. But he fits this team combo much better.
Stuge Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Give Vijay Shankar some slack. It was his WC debut match and that too against Pakistan and he did pretty good imo . Soorma_Bhopali 1

So far he has not let India down in any one-dayers he has played. Our perception is purely based on IPL and the warm up game. In the actual ODI games, he has been useful most of the time.

anish2tweet Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 I know it is frustrating to see VIjay Shankar swishing in the air. I have seen the exact same thing from Pant as well. Neither of them can purely qualify as a batsman. It ought to be a specialist if you really want a batsman. Shankar is a specialist only.look at his innings in NZ. proper cricketing shotsSent from my CPH1819 using Tapatalk

There are many guys from his own state that are better than him. Aparajith, Indrajith.
