Symonds may face punishment for manhandling spectator

Recommended Posts

Controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds could face a serious punishment from the International Cricket Council for manhandling a streaker during the second finals of the cricket tri-series against India in Brisbane today. Symonds, who has been an active participant in the on-field bickerings during India's explosive tour Down Under, was at the non-striker's end when the incident took place. When the man ran onto the pitch naked, trying to evade the police by approaching in the direction of Symonds, the all rounder leaned onto him in a rugby-style shoulder charge and grounded him in the 10th over of Australia's chase of 259. If umpires decide to report the incident to the game's world governing body and Symonds is found guilty of breaching the ICC's section 4.2 of the player's code of conduct he could be suspended for five Test matches or 10 one-day internationals to a life ban. The section 4.2 relates to a physical assault of a rival player, an official or a spectator. The streaker was later escorted out of the field by police and Symonds continued to bat with opener Matthew Hayden.

Greg Chappell had done one better than Symonds. When a streaker ran into the grounds, he actually spanked him with the bat, and it was not a tap but more a forceful spank(hope the streaker was into BDSM!). The streaker fell on the ground and was promptly arrested. Not sure if Greg Chappell was ever charged for it.

Don't think the ICC rules were in place for all this in such a codified manner during those days. But beating someone up is hardly a civil thing to do.

It probably depends on one's sense of humour. I am reminded of the Wimbledon finals in 90s when Malivai Washington was playing Richard Krajicek. A female streaker ran out to center court and Malivai Washington just sat there and laughed. Later on he would famously say - I was smiling cos I am sure I saw her smiling....vertically. Classic! Now feel free to be moral brigade and party pooper and report this :((:((
