I mean these so called secularists have been looking for a Hindu equivalence for like ever. The non-LTTE Lankan Tamil Hindus are usually the types who keep their head down and go about their business like Murali. His dad owned a biscuit factory or something and he was one of the nicest guys around. A tamilian friend of mine, his mom was a Lankan Tamil, she was highly educated and was a music teacher. Most Hindu Lankan Tamils from what I hear are peaceful types. LTTE had mostly Hindus and some Christians. Nowhere like commies, not anti-Hindu, quite anti-Muslim cos of bad experiences with that community. It was more about ethnicity/language and region (North and East), religion wasn't a motivation even though many of the fighters were devout Hindus. Secular fight for them but make no mistake, their cadre never abandoned Hinduism. Most of their funding was done by overseas Tamils via temples. Hill Tamils of central highlands (mostly low castes, indentured laour brought by colonizers to work in plantations, recent arrivals <200 years back) are heavily discriminated against but there isn't insurgency there. Also in big cities Tamils are better integrated. There isn't a great deal of unity among Lankan Tamils as well, LTTE never involved Hill Tamils in their fight against Lankan govt/army.
