As we see from above, the pre 1990 spinners performed relatively well in alien conditions. Post 1990, our spinners had the luxury of bowling on relatively spin friendly wkts at home. How would the pre 1990 spinners have done if they bowled on similar surfaces?

You can’t assess this by stats. For example Indian legends were disgusted when India was getting owned by Moeen Ali in England.

 

Similarly Jadeja was not rated for many years as he was considered a containing bowler who primarily darts.

 

However in the modern era they found success. Jadeja in fact even more.

 

Remember batsmen from T20 generation  are more attacking too which helps a spinner.

 

That is why plain number crunching never gives you valuable insight. It gives you a valuable input that you use to form your opinion on what you see, how much you have observed etc.

Post 1990 spinners have a huge difference b/w outside asia and at home avgs

These stats crunching are pointless tbf.

 

I think the toughest era for spin bowling was 90s and 00s. Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka all had world class batting lineup and top players of spin bowling. 

 

Hence, I will rate Kumble the highest among all. 600+ wickets are no joke afterall. Ashwin is a close second and can surpass him if he produces a couple of great series more outside Asia.

 

Bedi and Chandra are 3rd and 4th respectively.
