Disappearance of First class pre and mid series practice matches during Test tours

I remember till the 2000s every team which toured another country were playing practice games with county teams (Eng) etc either prior to a Test series or in the case of Ashes, mid way the series.

 

I am pretty sure in 2007 series, India played Northamptonshire as a warm up but not heard anything since then. I mean i am not saying only India should get practice games in England with good quality sides... SENA countries should come and play ranji state teams as part of warm ups to prepare for spinning tracks. This will allow for a balanced and entertaining series. The current state of Test matches is Boards have accepted that as long as their team wins at home and loses abroad, its a good financial compromise.. test cricket is the ultimate format but the way its going, its going to be a predictable sport and people will lose interest if you know India will demolish all countries at home but be humiliated themselves in SENA conditions ( in most cases).

No County games before Tests in England. Kohli first and then BCCI requested ECB for practice county games. ECB says no , due to Covid protocol. Fack China for India not getting practice county games. Intra-squad friendlies only for now.

The Indian team, once it assembles in London on July 14 and moves to Durham, will be once again be in a bubble. "The domestic cricketers of England not being in a bubble is an issue for sure. That's why the games in Durham will be intra-squad ones," a BCCI official said on conditions of anonymity. India are currently travelling with 24 players -- 20 in the official squad and nd four reserves -- which will allow them to play intra-squad games. However, legends like Sunil Gavaskar have questioned the amount of preparedness that a simulated match can give the team. The touring teams, in the past, have played multiple first first-class games against county sides.

Yes but football players from other European countries can play together in England for the Euros... the ECB is using covid as an excuse to ensure India does not get ANY acclimatisation to conditions and other teams to practice with.

 

The indian team has done its hard quarantine in early june.. so why are they treated differently to footballers?

Wembley is hosting the Euros...officials and UEFA friends are being let in without quarantine and the stadium will be at 45,000 to 60,000 in the next few weeks. Silverstone is also going to be packed with a 100,000 crowd although that is officially a government "test event"

 

Money talks and practice matches for India is not a priority in my opinion

ECB says it is hard to bio-bubble their domestic cricketers for tour games. Whatever be it, it could ECB stone-walling or BCCI asking for it too late. They couldn't have asked for it before the series? As usual dumbfacks managing the Indian team.

To be fair to them, neither Pakistan nor WI got any practice games when they toured last year.

 

England did not play a practice game in India before the test series. They did not play a practice game in Sri Lanka either.

Eng did not get any practice games when touring Eng earleir this year. Likewise NZ on their recent tour. This is mostly due to Covid.

 

However in previous tours Kohli and co have preferred to play with themselves rather than actual practice matches so that's on them.

Sure. The pandemic is a good enough reason to not have unnecessary matches

 

My point was more that when money talks, common sense goes out the window :)

But that's an ongoing issue across the world to be honest

I was talking about the general trend across the world of not providing touring teams with first class games anymore which has totally stopped in the last 6/7 years and not just the example of England.

 

Kohli's excuse was the teams sent by ECB are 4th string county sides- unless ICC mandates hosing boards to put out full strength domestic teams for practice games, we will see this nautanki of khel kood intra squad games continue
